LiveMusic
Tree falling on house caused all kinds of investigation into this house. Which is 43 years old. We have something here in the pantry (cupboard?) that bothers me. I can't believe I never noticed this. I don't THINK it just happened. But it's black. Looks like black mold. And I showed it to the A/C guy and he was petrified. He said "Don't touch that." Then I noticed it was in the image of a rectangle. And I looked on the other wall and it was directly behind an air vent and the shape exactly mirrored that vent. He mentioned something, can't recall. Maybe he said "No insulation was installed there at that vent." So, that stuff is either mold or mildew. Or are they the same? What I'm asking is... is mildew black? I think it is, right? So, maybe this is just mildew. Whatever it is, he said don't touch it, have you been seeing the news about mold? I said I was aware. He said he wouldn't touch it but get someone to paint over it. He mentioned a special paint. I think "black mold" is the bad guy? The one that causes mysterious illnesses when it gets in homes? I certainly qualify. Over the years, one of the symptoms I have is that on overcast days, I don't feel near as good. Often, I feel terrible. I've always suspected mold count. I have an air purifier in here running all the time but I don't think it's working right; I need to get it serviced. Do you know if a large area (say, 100 sq. in.) of black looking mold could be common mildew? Is mildew in that big an area black? > > > [ Live! ] < < <

Gabriel E.
Get it tested. I hope to hell that it's just Mildew - otherwise you're screwed. Unfortunately, we both live in a state that has recently had a massive increase in cases of black mold. Black mold cannot be effectively contained once it has established itself. A controlled burn of the house by the local FD is usually the only solution. Mildew's gross but it can be eliminated. Sorry if I alarmed you and good luck. I'm rooting for mildew!
