jnorman
a short while back i posted a question about "what the hell happened to guitar players?" or something like that, bemoaning the fact that pop music doesnt seem to even have guitar solos anymore, and the ones it does have are often by people who seem to have little mastery of their instrument. several folks pointed out a few of the rare exceptions, such as eric johnson, but largely, i think the question strcuk a chord with many of us - often blaming it on the grunge movement where all of a sudden it was acceptable, or even preferable, to sound like the garage bands we all played in when we were 15 years old - no sophistication or finesse in either performance or production. well, since that time, my daughter turned me on to some of the music she listens to, and by god, i was amazed - very tasty guitar (and other instrumental) work all over the place, super production values, meaningful (and even intelligible) lyrics - the whole nine yards. oddly, i had never spent anytime listening to this kind of music, but i will. anyway, good popular music made by some damn fine professionals is still out there - it's called "country music". i admit there is still some twangy stuff there that doesnt ring my bell, but there is some outstanding music in that genre these days. check it out. btw, MTV sucks, in case you were confused about that. jnorman sunridge studios salem, oregon

Steve LeBlanc
i admit there is still some twangy stuff there that doesnt ring my bell, but there is some outstanding music in that genre these days
hehe, I thought it wasn't country without the twang? ;) Well, regardless, I'll take twangy country over the neutered rock/pop crap that mainstream country radio plays today. Granted there are a few exceptions...I've heard some great tunes but most of it sucks worst than regular Pop/Rock. http://www.youtube.com/notesleb

Felix_dup1
I remember a quote I read recently from a prominent producer - he said, "80's rock is alive and well in today's Country Music." Funny, but true!
