Toyota Camry

Recommended Posts

Any a you guys have a Toyota Camry? Does your stereo sux out loud? I think it's all the padding they put in the side panels to keep the interior quiet. It sounds muffled. A snare drum should go pop, not thud. I've tried everything to make this thing sound better. Nice car except for the stereo and the old lady suspension, it floats over dips in the road.

Ha !! Ha !!! Yep I've got one ... people have ALWAYS commented on the stereo system that's in it. They say "man your in the music business and you listen to that ?????". Well it's got 250K miles on it and I just dropped in a new motor and plan to put another couple hundred thousand on it !!!!!!!! I'm not into cars or car stereo systems that much. One look around and you'll know real quick where my priorities are. But your post has me LOL :p

I drive an '89 with 125K miles that I inherited from pops. He put a Pioneer tuner / tape deck that helped a little, but the speakers really suck. I just refuse to invest in car audio. Always end up buying other stuff. The next car I buy will have a nice system one way or the other. I would love to see what XM radio is about too.

Yes I have a Camry. Yes the factory sound system stinks. :o I put in a nice Nakamichi head and I can live with the speakers (at least they are clean sounding). :D I bet my Camry sounds better than yours. :p :D Jerry

Hey, Rob K, are those the guys that put 10,000 watts in their cars. You know, the guys you hear booming from several blocks away? -- Rob

I straddle both worlds commercially and yup, the 4 wheel crowd can get radical. It's been called today's alternative to hot rodding and drag racing. Last drag race I read about in a March issue hit 170.7 db SPL. Of course you can't sit in the vehicle and it's over in seconds. The shop has some very expensive equipment back in pieces on Monday mornings. Tuning for quality is more my cup of tea.
It's OK to tempt fate. Just don't drop your drawers and moon her.

But what is a quality car stereo cd player that's not $$$$$? Seems like they're all extreamly hyped in the highs, and car speakers are all over the place... at the same time it seems like I keep seeing "respectable audio engineers" seeming to lose their criticalness when it comes to car audio, I don't get it... Seems like most every "nice system" I hear in cars sounds like overly-fast slew rates with hard dome tweeters, coupled with a scooped mid, peaky bass with massive ringing/overshoot.... and that doesn't even address phase issues... I remember an auto buff friend who let me hear his "system", and basically he had wired it in subtractive stereo in the back with his sub out of polarity with everything else, then wacked out phase wise with a graphic... sounded INCREDIBLY horrible... I need to splurge and get "something", since I've been using a cheesy portable cd player/cassette adapter for the past 10 years, but don't know where to start. What's a non-Crown Macrotech sounding unit (over damped), and what are some nice sounding kicker panel coaxials that aren't scooped/peaky? Also - that isn't $$$$$$? I remember at one time hearing some Denon stuff that didn't sound kooky, but they look sort of cheesed out these days...?

Come on over to the forums at www.carsound.com and ask the very same questions, I think you will find that you get a lot of useful information. First step I can tell you is to deaden the vehicle with a product like Dynamat. www.dynamat.com Dwarf. Yes some put stupid power in thier vehicle and no some do not, it runs the gambit. Much like anything in life. Chip, Did somebody hit you with a car audio system as a child? Just curious, you seem really bitter about the whole thing. :) Car Audio is about fun, sometimes it helps to remember that to keep everything in perspective.
