Headphone Amps

Recommended Posts

I'm looking at various 1U rackmount headphone amps and wanted to know if anyone here has used any of these models. So far I've found the Behringer HA4600 , Samson SPhone , Furman HDS6 , Rolls RA62 , and finally, the Oz Audio HR4 . Everyone here knows I don't like Behringer, but the unit is the cheapest of the lot, and from what I can tell, they might have actually designed the unit themselves :D . Should I spend the extra cash and get one of the other units instead?

This could help your decision. Berringer(k) I have been using a Fostex unit, can't remember the model # (sorry). It is a small desk top (or floor) thing with 5 outs and an A and B input. What is great about not having a rack unit is being able to move it to where ever the musicians are.

That was my gut feeling about the Behringer, but since it seemed to have more features than the others I thought it was worth looking into. I'd rather support a company that I didn't have as many ethical issues with anyways. Thanks for the comments so far!

My post in another thread:
(Behringer)...headphone amps have what I consider a problem. The minimum Impedance you can have on any of the four amp channels is 100 Ohms. This is a totally unrealistic number. Most headphones these days are very low...30-50 Ohms. Also, when you hook up two or three on the same channel...it gets even more complicated. The 3 outputs on each channels are wired in parallel...so if you do the math: (R1 x R2 x R3)/(R1 + R1 + R3) ...you'll see that a 100 Ohm minimum was a dumb idea. I called Behringer about it, and they said it was because in Germany, the two big headphone manufacturers (AKG and Sennheiser), made their high end headphones with Impedance in the 200 Ohm range. Well, that's not really the case anymore...so the Behringer Headphone amp is not a "flexible" unit. If you want to check out a good inexpensive 4-channel (3 outputs/channel) headphone amp...SAMSON S-PHONE. Actually if you look at it, and then look at the new Behringer (HA-4600)...boy, they look very much alike. Samson claims that theirs was out first...whatever... Bottom line, the Samson is rated down to an 8 Ohm minimum per channel...much more realistic and usable. I purchased one a couple of weeks ago...$170.
************** Hey Tom Hicks, Are you the same Tom Hicks from the nTrack Studio forum? I just joined there, and you just joined here! Welcome to the "zoo"! Psssst...don't feed any of the animals. ;)

 • 1 month later...
I have used the Oz Audio unit for about 6 years now. Have dropped it several times. Musicians have knocked it over serveral times in the studio. It sat in a cold garage for about 3 months once. It just keeps working. I get complaints that it is TOO LOUD! Since it really pumps out the volume to the phones, the musicians crank them up and it gives them headaches after a few hours of tracking. LOL Anyway, it is a very dependable, good working unit. The 4 aux busses and 6 seperate amps make it extremely versatile when tracking bands. I send a unity feed from aux sends on the console and let THEM mix their own monitors. I found it saves a lot of time, and hearing the arguements that insue is priceless! :) Dumdum

I have 3 Samson Q5, great value for money, I believe they still make 'em. The halfrack Q5 doesn't have as many knobs as their new fullsize blue thing - makes life in the studio a lot easier IMNSHO. I also have used the Behringer 4400. Verdict on that one: what a piece of s**t! /Mats

Definitely would recommend this unit, and I agree that I prefer one like this to a rack mount unit so you can move it around as necessary. --Lee
Originally posted by Dwight: hmmm....no one has had any good luck or sound with the B machine...I have had 2 working fine everyday for 5-6 yrs...I feel lucky! Go figure...
As long as you are using a high ohm headphones it might work with the B, but it goes bezerk almost instantly if you hook up a bunch of low ohm HP's. Perhaps they just couldn't figure out how it's done, couldn't find any good design to copy...? /Mats
