LiveMusic
Man, I _dig_ these guys' sound. Like, every song. Out of the three CDs I have, I like almost every single song. But I get hohum responses from friends. That doesn't mean much but I would've thought I'd get a better response than I've gotten when I play CDs for others. Maybe I just asked the wrong people. This Raul guy is quite a writer. And they work up some rather unexpected covers. "Something Stupid"... the 1967 song by ???, I haven't heard that song in decades and it is really a nice tune. If you like easy listening, laid-back stuff. "Here Comes My Baby"... that's another catchy workup. I've always liked the original record. I'm curious how they get their "sound." How would you describe their music? It's country with a laid-back feel to it with a Spanish influence on many songs with a strong bass line and often, a boogie beat. If you have a better way, even if it's simpler, advise. I don't really know how to slot them. They have a song, "If You Only Knew" that sounds very much like early Elvis. Do you think they would fit into the rockabilly genre? Sounds like a Strat playing lead but I'm not sure. Uses tremelo on some songs. That Raul guy plays acoustic, I think. Four guys in the group but I figure their recording "group" is: acoustic guitar / sometimes 12-string lead electric guitar bass (electric / standup) drums keys (piano / B3) fiddle steel guitar > > > [ Live! ] < < <

I like the Mavericks, one of 3 or 4 recent country acts that I dig. Are they still together? Other "alternative country" acts I like a lot: Lyle Lovett (a favorite singer/songwriter in any genre) k.d. lang (when she was singing country... "Shadowland" is terrific) Dwight Yoakum ("This Time" is my favorite of his) BR-

Where's the soul, passion & commitment under all that slick playing?" Boy, I'd hardly call the mavericks "slick." Shania Twain and her ilk of "country" are definitely slick, but the Mavericks definitely don't get rid of all the rough edges (if i recall correctly, "dance thenight away" has a very out of tune trumpet part). I really like the Mavericks. Some of the slower songs don't do much for me, but most of their songs have an interesting mix of country, texmex, and cuban; and the playing is top notch. LiveMusic
Originally posted by mzeger: BR-549
Goes to show you how people like different stuff. Based on recommendations like yours on BR-549, I bought "This Is BR-549." I hope that's just one of their bad ones because I don't like a single song. Just hohum, boring songs to me. Although, I do seem to remember a hit or two I did like. To me, the Mavericks are something very special. Their music is so "alive," it seems. It's definitely not run-of-the-mill, it's unique. Of course, anything with a Latin flavor to it, there's a good chance I'm gonna like it. If anyone know what kind of guitar their lead guitarist usually plays, let me know. Sounds like a Strat. > > > [ Live! ] < < <
Roto
The Mavericks are cool, though if you check out Trampoline you will find that they veered away from country music. I think Raul Malo must've went solo because they haven't released anything in a while and I've seen him on TV, and in projects like Los Super Seven The Mavericks did a killer cover of a Bruce Springsteen song, All That Heaven will Allow, on their album What a Crying Shame . That was much more of a country album. I like BR5-49. Their last cd got a bad review on www.allmusic.com, so you may want to pick up something else to initiate yourself to them. Their first cd is still in print. I always check www.allmusic.com on a band I've never heard before I choose which cd to buy first. They are pretty good at picking out which albums were the best for each artist.
where02190
I not only love the Mavericks, but modern crossover country in general. I am a product of 70's and 80's pop, and to me this music seems to be along those same lines. Sappy, lvoe songs, and truck drivin', girl chasin' hard drinkin' songs that make me feel good. (And no drum machines!!!!!!!!!!) real people playing real music, for the most part!!!!!!!! Hope this is helpful. NP Recording Studios Analog approach to digital recording. russrags
Hey LIVE, I LOVE the Mavericks. I've got a good story. Belive it or not, I was in Sam Ash Music and ran into their LD GTR player working in the GTR dept. I couldn't believe he was having to do that, but he said he's got kids to feed and he CAN"T get a gig in Nashville ???? I told him how cool I thought the Mavericks were and about shows I've attended. I asked him if he remembered the first time he heard Stevie Ray Vaughn .... well that's what it was like for me hearing the Mavericks for the first time. I thought they brought a very refreshing angle on Country Music. It was like a good feeling in the air. I asked him "what happened to the band???? Did Yoko Ono (Trisha Yearwood) break up the band ???" I thought he was going to fall over laughing so hard. He said Yep, that was part of it. Anyway, their a GREAT band. I don't much care for their first CD, but the rest of em are wonderful, just like the Chiss Issak Show on Showtime Ha !!! Ha !!!! LIVE .... when you gonna come to Nashville and go Honky Tonkin' ???? Arjay
My wife and I both love(d) the Mavericks, and managed to see them three times when they were touring. The first show was at a small club in Northampton Mass, where a local band called Blood Oranges opened. The second time was at Tanglewood, when they opened for Mary Chapin Carpenter, and the last time was a show at Smith College, where they again headlined, with Junior Brown opening. Three great shows. The first was the best IMHO, but that's because we were standing AT the stage for it, and swapping smiles and remarks with the boys the whole time. Raul and Robert were the most outgoing of the bunch. Nice guys. I would like to see them work together again, but it's all very hush-hush and lots of winking, apparently, when any one of them is asked to comment. Oh well, carry on. There's always something going on .. hope you can come up to check out our city. You accidentally run into more people here than anywhere else, even if you were trying. Man you gotta check out the Chriss Issak Show. It's great. I'd like to own both season's on video as soon as it becomes available. As far as CDs go check out his new one. I've just listened to it once and think there are some pretty cool tuines on it. I had pitched him a song for this record, but he didn't take it, although I think it's much stonger than several songs on his new record. Oh well. Alan Jackson had a hold on it too and it's not on his record either. Come to Nashville and we'll put you on it, how 'bout that ?????? DeluxeReverb
I'm a little late to this party, but what the heck. I was Raul and Nick's guitar tech for a year on the Trampoline tour. Great bunch of guys...any band that brings a horn section out with them (The Havana Horns) is cool with me. Tons of hip guitars - L-5's, Les Pauls, ES-135's, Swingmaster, Jerry Jones 12 string, JJ doubleneck baritone and 12 string, J-200, J-45, Korina Flying V and most of the electrics had Bigsbys. Fun to play, hard work to keep them all in tune!! A lot of the cool guitar stuff on the albums is Brent Mason (some of his tastiest work, I think) and Raul played a lot of the hooky riffs on "Music For All Occasions" and "Trampoline". Nick Kane is a monstrous rockabilly guitarist who has a solo album out called "Songs In The Key of E" on the Demon label - worth getting for the Deep Purple cover alone!! Yes, he works at Sam Ash...a gig is a gig. Sometimes it's the Mavericks, sometimes it's retail. Raul has a brand new solo record out recorded in L.A. with some smokin' Cuban players...lots of Cuban grooves an a couple of classic Mavericks-style tunes...plus he did a guest appearance on my own record singing the '40's standard "I'll Be With You in Apple Blossom Time". He can croon.
