G. Ratte
Hi... wondering if somebody can give me a rough idea here... I've got a site moving about 50 gigs of traffic a day without even trying. Another guy is offering to host it out of his basement for free on a T-1. I know the commercial place I'm at now (Hurricane Electric) has OC3s, 10 GigE, all kindsa crap... is a T-1 hopeless, or would that work? thanks! G. Rim
If you are moving 50 gigs a day, I personally wouldn't trust web hosting to a guy's basement and stick with your commercial provider. Most likely, your commercial provider has SLAs (service level agreements) that guarantee you a certain level of performance and availability. Can the basement guy do this? Even if he does, but doesn't deliver, what's your leverage? You're already not paying him. Does he have a full T-1 (1.13 Mbps) and not a fractional one? A full T-1 costs around $1-2K a month. He's willing to give you that for free? A full T-1 can give you 80 gigs per day. Will your site be the only thing on this T-1 or will you be sharing this with others? Commercial sites will have redundant power, redundant connections, and technical support. What does this guy have? "You get what you pay for" may apply here. I'd rather get competitive quotes from other providers and see if you can get a better a deal with your current one than go with the basement guy. aka riffing Double Post music: Strip Down http://rimspeed.com http://loadedtheband.com

[/quote]He's got a full T-1, though it'd be shared w/a couple smaller sites he's hosting. Yeah, for free. He's one of the @Stake/L0pht/cDc guys so the main benefit would be his security know-how as the site is a pretty big target to take down. Yesterday I hit 53 gigs, so I'mma be paying extra cash for that on top of the $60/month. I don't know what kinda feed the commercial place has my site on now, but it's hella fast. Would being on a T-1 throttle things back, at that kinda traffic would you think? Crap. Well, what I really need is a cheap place I can dump a buncha MP3s and eventually Quicktime movies on and link to from my main site, that'd do it. thanks... G.
