Live Recording Mics

Recommended Posts

I do some live recording with a 6 channel mixer ( I may be getting a new..old 6 channel TAPCO soon), 3 old sony mics and my minidisc recorder, and it all sounds great already! I just want to get some new, better mics for now, and I'm looking for suggestion for good, and cheap, mics for live recording. I usually record from a distance, not right near the musicians if that helps. The Audix SCX-25 seems good...but I can't even afford one..grr :freak:

I use and really like the Marshall Electronics MXL1000 mics. They're small diaphragm condenser mics. The package deal out now is 2 of the MXL1000's & a Fox dynamic. The Fox is just ok but consider it's a freebee. I think it's about $150.00 at Musicians Friend. The mics work great for vocal and acoustic guitar, recorded live and I've used them to record in my somewhat of a home studio. Another really good mic that's priced right is the Carvin CM68. It's their answer to the Shure SM58 & it works really well. If you want to hear the MXL's live, go HERE . It was live out of my 6 channel mixer & into a cassette recorder with an ambient mic blended in. Oops, I forgot the link to Carvin. It's there now.
Originally posted by Soundcrafter: that's a great price..but do you know of any place in Canada that might sell them? preferably in the Toronto area.
This is the info I could find on the Canadian distributor. They could tell you if there's a place near you. Yamaha Canada Music LTD. Canada Scarborough, Ontario M1S 3R1 135 Milner Avenue (416)298-1311 (416)292-0732 sales@yamaha.ca The price at Musicians Friend is stll $149.99 so if there's a Guitar Center around, they should be able to get it. It's called the "Marshall Electronics Fox Mic Package". One other note. These MXL1000's are very hot mics. I have to use the 20db cut on my mixer.
