byankeeman Posted March 21, 2002 Posted March 21, 2002 The track is hot - in urban its kinda hip to be off and not always quantized. Actually these types of beats have been around a lil bit in hip-hop. As for Brandy's vocals shes a very underrated singer. Her signature has been her airy/raspy voice and she has really dope timing. It doesn't always sound good live but in the studio it's killer.
G. Ratte Posted March 21, 2002 Posted March 21, 2002
What does IDM mean?
IDM means "Intelligent Dance Music", a stupid-ass term for quirky weird shit by geeks w/laptops. Not known for being catchy or especially fun to listen to (IMO) but if you wanna catch the newest-in-new production tricks, that's where you're looking. Aphex Twin and Kid606 are the best-known practitioners. G. Ratte' http://www.cultdeadcow.com
Curve Dominant Posted March 21, 2002 Posted March 21, 2002 "Intelligent Dance Music" - WTF?? Isn't that some kind of basic contradiction in terms? Dancing is about the booty, not the brain. E Eric Vincent (ASCAP) www.curvedominant.com

Consult Artificial Intelligence Vol. 1, WARPCD6, Warp Records (Sheffield UK), released 06.07.93 for a primer on the aesthetic. In terms of being a genre, it has been around for at least 10 years now, and been through three major phases of evolution. Major exponents of the form: Aphex Twin, The Black Dog, Autechre, Boards of Canada, Fizzarum, Funckarma, Plaid, Mouse on Mars, Funkstörung, Sun Electric, LFO, Monolake...stuff like that. Mark V Posted March 22, 2002 Posted March 22, 2002 Most important feature of this track?Did she look really cool on the video .Having not seen or heard it,I would guess ,most likely. More guessing would suggest she looks down right sexy,am I right? God damn I bet she's got that kind of sultry voice too.Now I have convinced myself I must hear/see this song , on the TV of course,I will reserve my suck factor rating until then . I once had a quasi-religious experience..then I realised I'd turned up the volume.
big g Posted March 22, 2002 Posted March 22, 2002 Interesting posts!!! Everything I felt about this song was already pointed out. I'll highlight 1. Only musicians seem to find the rhythm distracting. All my accountant/engineer/marketing homies found the rhythm to be right on the money right away. I on the other hand had to hear the song a couple of times before the rhythm felt natural. I wonder why?? 2. The more I hear it the more I like it 3. Its ALL over the radio 4. Its definately original 5. I also wondered if she originally sang the song to a a simpler rhthym. Now that I think about it, I read somewhere that after Rodney Jerkins records vocals, he often sequences more parts. In conclusion. Its original. Its Funky. Brandy sounds great. I'm glad to see this sort of "risk taking" during a time when everything sounds like everything else. Look for a lot of urban producers to try and copy this sound. G

Bobro Posted March 31, 2002 Posted March 31, 2002 Well I've heard the song a couple of times now- first heard it in the cacophony of the Messe. It's actually quite straightforward, some three-ing over certain beats, cool accents, whatever, no big deal- it just has a wonderful groove and I like it. It's a great feeling to hear something both widely popular and musically good. -CB
