Forum Main Page loading problems and other upgrade wierdness...

Recommended Posts

All of a sudden the Forum Main Page will not load...but I can go to individual forums without problems. Using pre-6.0 Netscape (I use 4.79). This doesn't seem to be a problem in IE. Also, I notice that from the Music Player page...the URL to the Forum Main Page is: http://www.musicplayer.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi But when linking from individual Forums back to the Forum Main Page the URL is: http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php Maybe it is supposed to be this way...? Also...I still have that "horizontal weirdness" with the post/edit window. Right now as I am typing this post, if I don't use a line break, the text will continue horizontally on one single line...into infinity…… Before the recent, so called "upgrade", as soon as your text reached the " right end" of the post/edit box...it would automatically Word Wrap even if you did NOT use a line break. This is very annoying because it makes it hard to follow what you are reading/writing. Again, this seems to be only the case with pre-6.0 Netscape and not IE. Now someone will say...why don't I upgrade to 6.0 or use IE…??? I don't like either of those two and feel that Netscape 4.x is still a very active product and should still be fully supported. Sometimes...you really have to follow the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" rule. Fucking upgrades...they always remind me of going to the dentist..."don't worry, this won't hurt too much"... Oh...and the web site still loads like a snail on 'ludes... Otherwise…how's your day Rob?

It's how the caching system works behind the scenes to serve pages faster...
Originally posted by miroslav: Also...I still have that "horizontal weirdness" with the post/edit window. Everything seems to be peachy here, so try doing a traceroute to see if there's any latency between you and the site.

Well...the "horizontal weirdness" happened when I posted the above...not in edit mode. Although, it does happen in edit too...sometimes...??? Right now, it is fine...huh??? Another thing I notice, (which may be connected)...last post, the font was different or it might have just been a larger point size...and now it's small again...huh? I've noticed that this has been flipping back and forth since the upgrade...sometimes large...sometimes small…and sometimes one of the forums is one way and then going to another forum it's a different point size...and then there is that damn "horizontal weirdness"… It's all too intermittent to really nail down..but I'll try and pin point it better if I can. The slow loading...maybe it's some shit on my end, but I've seen other folks mention it too...but again all intermittent. Oh...and the "spell checker"...that is totally pooched...just dump it altogether. It usually is not working and states that there is "no data" to check...other times it will crash my browser. Hey...not just complaining...but trying to provide creative criticism so you can iron out this puppy some more.

Well the spell checker is not stock and is "hacked" in and is "partial" in that it does not complete the results of the spell check into the message. I just tried it on PC Netscape 4.x and no problems...I've yet to actually hear or see a problem with it...

You might think I'm a pain-in-the-ass...but Netscape is still slow as snails...IE is much faster. When I try to go to the Main forums page...the browser just hangs forever on newads.cmpnet.com Connecting...loading...loading...loading...Y-A-W-N... :bor: But when I go to individual forums...it loads quicker...there's no newads.cmpnet.com Actually, what I've noticed is, that even in IE...there are NO ADS...yippee!!! It's just that IE loads all the rest of the page while still trying to connect to newads.cmpnet.com in the background. Netscape first tries to load the newads.cmpnet.com crap and then gets hung up on it...never loading the rest of the page. Now I could live without ads...NO PROBLEM...but the damn browser keeps trying to connect to that site...and therefore holds up everything else.

This is an issue with Netscape. I won't display the tables until it completes "downloading" to your machine. As for the "horizontalness", check out what this UBB developer had to say in their support forums .
This is an issue with the incorrect way NS4's five year old engine tries to cope with the CSS we've started using to get around its own bugs.... Can't and won't fix.
Use Opera :D .

"We are going to give you a great new product...but...it doesn't work well with your exisiting stuff. So, we will stop supporting the existing stuff you already have, and force you to upgrade everything so that it works with our...great new product!!!" YEAH...that's the way to do it alright...!

Well, according to what the UBB devloper is saying, it's that Netscape 4.x itself was/is buggy and does not deal with a fairly long-standing and standard feature called CSS (cascading style sheets).

Yeah, I know about CSS...but there are other UBB web sites that don't seem to exhibit these so-called "old-Netscape" problems...maybe some developers are just doing it differently...??? It's OK...it's all about finding a work-around isn't it? We'll get by......
