Recommend mic/mic pre combo

Recommended Posts

I know this topic has been discussed at least a few times already, and I have done a search on this as well, so please bear with me. I am looking to find the best mic/mic pre combo, in the 5k nieghborhood, for recording a smooth male baritone vocal. I will be recording to a Mackie HDR24. I was thinking of a Neumann M149 to either a Cranesong Flamingo, or UA 2-610. I prefer a stereo unit so that I can use it on other instruments as well(but mainly for vox). I am not in an area where I can test these out first hand unfortunately - will probably order thru Fletcher at Mercenary. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance for any help.

The M149 could change your life! It made me buy a Flamingo! Talk about sweet! This is a mulching combo! I don't think you could go wrong buying into either of these two machines! I hope you make the right decision... I think I did! Very happy. Flush

I plug my 149(s) into: Neve 1073 Helios Focusrite TLA pre amps with eq to name a few.. The Flamingo is supposed to rock. I do this mostly for EQ the M149 throws out nearly line level signal, you could go flat into a compressor if you wanted to. (Der! Is the Flamingo a compressor?!!!) Over all I like Cransing gear I have the 'Hedd'. Fletcher of Mecenary Audio is on holliday, ask him when he gets back. http://www.mercenary.com tell him I sent you! The Flamingo f***ing rocks - it really made me re-evaluate my microphone cabinet. An M149 should arrive at my studio tomorrow or Monday, I'll bribe a couple of musicians & singers to come put the combination through its paces next week. I expect it will live up to expectations, but I am VERY critical of gear and have been disappointed before... Scott
