Help - My email is all messed up!!!

Recommended Posts

Where do I turn with technical issues that are beyond me? Guess who? Music Player forum, that's who!!!

My email is all fruited up!!!

I am on a Macintosh G4. System 10 point something or other....

I use Internet Explorer 5.2 for Mac. My email works. But the little stamp on my dock doesn't get my new email anymore. And the inbox displays a triangle with an exclamation mark in it.

When I click on that it gives me an error message:There may be a problem with the mail server or network.

The server error encountered was: The server pop.earthlink.net cannot be contacted on port 110.

What to do??????

Bruce, this may be a temporary problem with Earthlink, based on the server error message. It happens occasionally.

See if the problem still exists in a couple of hours. It may fix itself. Do NOT start changing things in your email preferences.

port 110 is your port of the computer to the server at your provider! When you connect with Internet Explorer normally it just connects thru this port!

________________________________________________

When this connection does not work as usual, following is possible:

1) A little windows pops up, where you can enter you logon. The logon is the combination you got from your provider, this is on a piece of paper you received back then.

2) Your provider is down.

3) we will see...

You can receive mail, but nothing is going out?

I was able to telnet to their POP server ok on port 110 so you are probably having a network issue. Check that your firewall setup isn't blocking port 110 for some reason.

Try to ping pop.earthlink.net from your Mac (sorry, I'm a PC guy so I can't give you a step-by-step). As Jon Doe confirmed, that server is up since I can ping it, too. If your e-mail still doesn't work, your Mac seems to be having a problem connecting to that server. Check your network cable and Internet connection. You can also try rebooting your Mac. Like Jeff said, if it was working fine before, you do not want to start messing around with your e-mail settings.

If your email is full...you may not be receiving anymore. this is why I went to internet based G mail as my "large email portal" but I will leave it to the MacGeniuses here to help with the Mac issues.

Earthlink has inbox limits and when it gets full, time to delete some things.

Everyone, please respect Bruces email..he is a busy Man!!

If you want, I can send you a G mail link so you can use that...with no worries.

Thanks Everyone.....

Actually my email works! i can get my email by going to my email web-page. It works sending and recieving...

But only from the earthlink Web-Page...

It's just that my Explorer stamp thing on my dock doesn't work and it has that nasty little Triange with the exclamatioin mark on it!

If you haven't changed any email settings lately, don't worry about it. Earthlink mail servers are down from time to time.

I'd just wait it out.

And it is mandatory that you edit your original post

(click the symbol with the pencil/paper at the top of your post).

Why? Because bots crawl the web looking for email addresses. And once your email has been harvested, you will never stop the spam.

Last, but not least...

It seems we haven't converted Bruce over to the good side. Let's make sure he gets firefox or mozilla pronto.

To do that, just hit the little symbol this...... ^^ one that looks like a paper with a pencil directly above the ^^ (they are pointers) and you can do your editing Bruce. They are serious about that. Displaying your email publically is one of those russian roulette things. When I did, my inbox got flooded with spam for viagra!!!!!!!!

What a P-----!

:confused::confused::confused::confused:

Bruce,

There are programs (bots) that crawl the web in search of email addresses. It's called harvesting.

And once your email address has been harvested, you might as well be begging for spam.

This has nothing to do with your current problem, it's just not safe to put your email address on display for all the bots to find.

At the top of your original post, you will see this... http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/edit_ubb6.gif

...click it...

You will then get the original post returned for an edit.

Remove the following section in bold from your original post.

When I click on that it gives me an error message:There may be a problem with the mail server or network. Check the settings for account email@earthlink.net or try again.
After you remove that section, click edit post at the bottom of the entry form.
