Rush in Rio DVD - trashed audio!

Recommended Posts

I know the compression topic has been addressed here before, and that Rush is the topic of a fairly well-read article on compression. Please forgive me for rehashing.

I had the drummer of my prog band over for some inspirational listening/viewing. One tune we're doing this weekend is "Tom Sawyer"... I put on the DVD and the performance is undeniably great. Problem is, you have to listen through the horrendous sound to try to hear how great the performance is! That is, after you've seriously turned down the volume from whatever DVD you had on previously. Man, every cymbal crash sounds like white noise, every bassdrum whump sounds like white noise, the guitar sounds like white noise... and those drum hits & cymbal crashes come across with NO impact. They're just noise. In a medium with almost unlimited potential for dynamic range, almost all available bandwidth is filled to the max almost all the time.

The sound on that DVD is so bad it hurts. I wanna watch it, but can't bear more than one or two songs at a time.

I used to think I was Libertarian. Until I saw their platform; now I know I'm no more Libertarian than I am RepubliCrat or neoCON or Liberal or Socialist.

This ain't no track meet; this is football.

I get a feeling that many folks can't differentiate, that they view any criticism of a product put out by their fave band as a slap at them.

Either that, or their ears are just shot and they truly cannot hear the diff between a cymbal crash on the first 'Rio' track and a cymbal crash on, say, the "Exit Stage Left" version of the same song.

Amongst the worst sounding dvd's I have ever heard.

Such a shame..I wonder "who done it" Mastering, rendering engineer or the foh guy..

I bet on mastering and rendering. They both squashed it to hell.

Bill Roberts Precision Mastering
