what quirks do you put up with in your studio?

Recommended Posts

no matter how large or small, seems every studio has some weird "quirk" that in the end, you find yourself just ignoring and 'dealing with it' to get the job done. what do you put up with? for instance in my current place, which is located in a city brownstone, the 5x5x5.5 ft drum booth (or veal pen as i call it), by necessity is located in the basement so the neighbors don't call the cops. that veal pen just happens to be 4 floors below where everything else is. if i play drums on a track, i more often than not have to set 2 minutes of pre-roll time so i can, hit 'record,' get my ass down the stairs, get in the veal pen, put headphones on etc.... needless to say i go up and down the stairs a lot! of course that's just a home studio. but years agog i worked in several big studios where things were weird to say the least. one had a really great old API console retrofitted with moving fader automation, but it had this horrible, horrible jury-rigged patch bay that was a mix of both TTL and 1/4" jacks in a rack that was nowhere near the console. seems no matter what patch cable you grabbed it was always the 'wrong' one. another place i worked at (and a bunch of big names came through that place) for some strange reason did not have a fridge! fairchild compressor? yes. trident a-range console? yes. a rack full of pultecs? yes. a god damn fridge? NO. "sorry (insert big artist name here), we don't have any cream for your coffee. perhaps would you like a warm soda?" -d. gauss

1. Kids 2. Cats 3. The world's worst mixer, soon to be replaced. 4. Monitors with constantly blown tweeters. 5. Schizophrenic computers. 6. No possibility of turning up the volume above -60dB for fear of the remote possibility of disturbing anyone. Ah, the joys of studio at home. - Jeff

-my f**king neighboors and their f**king rap music!  it's hard to record classical guitar when there is a 'thump..thump.....thump..thump..thump..booooom' comming from the other side of the wall! (it's ok, they're on their way to being evicted)

Amongst other things, the studio is in the coldest room in the house... until you turn the heat on. Then it's the hottest room in the house. Then there's the old Sanyo tape deck, which is sitting on top of the old Fisher 8-track/ tuner/ turntable/ amp unit, which is sitting on top of the old Emerson 8-track/ see above. I've decided to crack those babies open to get at their high impedance mic pres, and also for educational reasons. When am I going to do it? Ah, er, um, ahhh, hem, haw... -Danny

I've got crickets too. Always have to tell the wife not to run water upstairs when I'm recording because the pipes pass right through my studio's closet. MIDI weirdness up the wazoo, but MID weirdness is redundant, isn;t it?

Probably my biggest quirk is forgetting how this is connected to that which runs to this, but only if I'm using the -10 output; the +4 out only goes to the EQ, which patches into tracks 17&18 on the board but only when the mic switch is thrown, oh yea, I currently have the compressor patched into channel 17 and it's powered down, um, that why I'm not hearing one of the channels right now and oh yea, that cable gets flakey once in a while too, & I also gotta remember to make sure the thermostat is down 'cuz when the furnace kicks on I get a spike but only when the I'm using the pre that is plugged into the same power bus as the washer & dryer & this does not apply when I'm recording to ADAT, only the 2408 which I gotta remember to set the ADAT as the master clockwhenI'mrecordingtothe 2408andmymonitoraresharingthesamemixerinputswiththeDATwhenIhavethelineinchosenbutthisonlyapplieswhenIwanttodubfromtheDATtotheCDRwhichistobemonitoredfr omthe-10outputsonlybecauseitwillcauseafeedbacklooptothelines1&2inonthe2408'schannels1&2butthischangeswhenI'mtrackingmyselfversusthewholeband'causeInee dalltheinputsavailablefotthedrumswhichthekickhas2inputsbeingusedonethrutheboardandonethrutheAphexpredogetthatbigfatsoundIdiscoveredbutnowhaveforgotten howtoduplicatewhatIdidbeforeIswitchedtheoutputfromgoingtothecompressortonowgoingtotheeqIhopetorediscovertheatsoundverysoonbecauseoneceIstarttrackingth eotherbandthatsoundwillbegoneforever. (it's ok, they're on their way to being evicted)[/b][/quote] Sacdog, I can relate! We used to be in a commercial building in downtown Riverside. This 64,000 sq. ft. building was originally a YMCA, and later a Scientology Center  , then an "Arts Building". We had a nice big place, down in the basement. Really quiet. Great isolation. Above us was the old gym. The oner decided to convert it into a hall and rent it out for Quincineras and wedding receptions. Nothing quite matches the experience of having Ranchero music playing through a 5,000 watt system while 500 people jump up and down on your ceiling. Kinda makes recording (or even THINKING) difficult... Fortunately, our lease soon expired, the owner decided to put in a Gold's Gym in the entire basement area and we bought our current house (1/3 acre with a 1,200 sq. ft. cinderblock barn, which we converted for the new studio). I had a minor stroke though, when a week after we moved in, one of the neighbors decided to hold a Quincenera for their daughter... Great topic! 1. The refridgerator has been slowly dying for years now. We need to replace it, but its more fun to spend money on gear. 2. It can get quite hot in the summer. In 2003 the whole building will get a new vent system that will take care of things 3. There are rehearsal rooms nearby, sometimes it's not good... Fortunately, all bands here are very understanding and accomodating - if we need them to take a break, we always offer them coffee & a snack. 4. I'm lagging in the department of putting new gear in the racks. It's stupid because all the cabling from racks to patch are already in place. 5. Patchbay labeling, big lag here too. What's good though is that EVERYTHING here is working fine (except for the fridge).

What do we want? Procrastination!

for some reason i know that i will get irate before i end this letter. -my studio is just under a noisy pizza delivery.noisy people, noisy oven, loud four-to-the-floor techno music -i get ground hum on mics because i use badly mounted light dimmers in the tracking room and i haven't had them fixed yet.this means that everytime i use a condenser mic i have to turn off the lights and light candles -no bathroom -two weeks ago my behringer mixer started giving these huge,sudden,monitor-damaging spikes . i brought the mixer to repair but the guy doesn't know what's wrong with the mixer... so maybe something's wrong with the electrical circuits in the studio...who knows. -the studio is in a basement that is adjacent to a very busy street.there's so much dust coming from the windowns it's unbelievable.no air conditioning either. there's plenty more, but i don't wanna write anymore...maybe someone could help me understand what's wrong with my mixer or the electrical circuit in the "studio".ciao for now. :(

"2) The floor is a legitimate place to store things. " HAHAHA i love that sounds like my studio setup until recently. now i just have to compete with the dust :( oh and housemates. oh and the cat who just KNOWS when to meow outside the door (hmmm, it thinks, he must be recording now... MEEEEEOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!) oh and the bird... the south american parrot im 'babysitting' for relatives, who resides in the drum room on top of the old organ (dont ask how electronic producers wound up with this organ... stupid story) anyway the bird can talk but LOVES to answer the smart-ass cat with a HUGE and LOVELY "reoeeeeeeerk!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! chirp!!!!! MEEEEEEEEEEEP@!@!!@#$!@$%!#%!#$!%#^ followed, in true smart-ass animal fashion, with a quiet "hello" i also am situated on a very very busy road but the house is adequately soundproofed, cant hear it when i sleep, let alone at my version of "unity gain"... heh heh heh it pays to have an elderly (see: DEAF) lady on one side and a busy road masking your LOUD drumming for the other neighbours :p

I'll keep this narrow so it fits on the page. ;) The heater, sump pump, and Beermiester are in the same room as the studio. Gotta shut everything down while tracking. Everything's O.K., as long as there's incense, low, colored lighting, and beer. Steve
