Boxing My Old Mixer

Recommended Posts

I'm thinking of selling my old mixer on eBay, but I threw away the box for it a long time ago. Are there any eBay vets here who can advise me on how to box it up for shipping after I sell it? My old mixer is a 24 channel Soundtracs Solo MIDI board. Here is a photo of the 32 channel version of my mixer. There is also a separate power supply that would need to be boxed. Thanks, in advance, for any help. Best, Geoff

Bubble wrap is probably the best thing to go with now. Once you have the thing wrapped (a couple of wraps should do) measure it and find the closest size box you can. Then fill the void with fiber fill (peanuts). I sold a charging system test machine and had to dis-assemble it and still had to build a shipping container for it. Your's should be a lot easier. I never done that before...

Some shippers like UPS have issues with the overall dimensions and weight of your package, as one driver has to handle it. I'd consult a place like Mailboxes Etc. They also have all the stuff to wrap and box your mixer. Most big UHaul dealers do, too. When all else fails, use a Soapbox. Namaste' Henry

They're professionals and know just the right amount of bubble wrap and popcorn, as well as fees and options. Couldn't live without my mailbox lady! (ok - well, my business would be tougher, put it that way.) And hey, if you need popcorn or bubble wrap, I've got a bunch! :D lz www.lauriez.com (hi to Ongelique!)

Namaste, henrysb3; and thanks for the advice regarding Mail Boxes Etc. and U-Haul . They sound like good solutions (but would you trust them to ship your B3?). ;) Also, I don't think I have a soapbox big enough for my mixer! :D DRiLoad, LOL! Thanks for your generous offer of "tree-fiddy!" I'll have to keep it in mind! Laurie, thanks for affirming that Mail Boxes Etc. is a good choice; and thanks for your popcorn and bubbles offer. How do your tour go? I'll say "hi" to Ongelique! Best to all, Geoff

I'd pay the shipping if someone would send me a B3. I've been trying to tweak my Roland to sound like one for years. The handle comes from my initials, - my dad was Jr. I've loved that sound for years: Jimmy Smith, Merle Saunders, Mike Finnigan. It is one keyboard sound that doesn't come cheap. Like Harleys, original VW's, old John Deere tractors, and Fender Telecasters, that tone wheel wonder just has universally recognizeable sound of its own. After hearing a K.C. blues guy named Lawrence Wright play a Hammond synth-sized keyboard that was as close as I have ever heard to the real thing, I posted over on the Keyboard forum to see if anyone could help me cheap out and find a B3 emulator that was less than a Les Paul, but it appears to be a hard nut to crack. Two manuals, two hundred pounds of mahogony and multiple hernias keep a lot of Hammonds in basements. And UPS would certainly say no. Henry S. Blake, III and there ya have it.

I sold a 24 channel Allen & Heath Saber console on ebay. I took it to a shipping company and had it crated. It was well worth it! I work in a warehouse and see everday what shipping companies do to boxes. Dont take any chances!

Duhduh, what shipping company did you use for crating your mixer? Was it here in Los Angeles? Yikes! There goes another aftershock! That's one earthquake and two aftershocks in about fifteen minutes! Okay, that was totally off topic, but it was a bit unsettling to say the least!

I wouldn't trust mail boxes etc., they wouldn't know about how delicate your faders/knobs are, or really care about your mixer being throw of the truck upside down. I think their job is to box most normal things fast. Your mixer is not a normal thing--it is big, heavy and delicate at the same time. The best way is to crate it--or at least build a wood frame above the faders that prevent anything heavy (like your mixer upside down) from resting/hitting the top of your board. if your mixer has side panels that are attached with external screws, you can cut 2 side panels out of plywood and bolt them to the side of the mixer and then attach the top ply cover, etc. Maybe then you could still box it in cardboard...but at least it would have a sturdy wood frame above your faders. Oh, if you fill the box with popcorn, don't forget to wrap your mixer in plastic 1st! All that Styrofoam is not good for the ocean or your faders ;) Flea man [ 01-29-2002: Message edited by: Flea man ]

Any ideas on where I could have it done professionally here in LA? Perhaps there's a section in the Recording Industry Sourcebook ...
Hmm, I don't really know...and if there was, it probably wouldn't be cheap (depending on how nice, wood + labor could easily cost $100 or more). My idea was a DIY type project. There probably is a wherehouse/crating company that could do it (how well and carefull I don't know)...but the time involved in finding a good place that won't damage your mixer and crate it well for a good price...I would think by that time you could of DIY for less $$. Remember, It doesn't have to be pretty---just functional. Flea man
