Hayman
You know when someone scores a goal, or when some other "pause" comes up, someone starts a sample (a few seconds of music) over the speakersystem at the hockeyarena. What kind of device would be usable for this kind of fast music triggering? The reason I ask is that a friend of mine called me last night and asked me about this. His 10 year old daughter plays handball and they wanted to spice up their home games a bit. (I'm sure the kids would love it. Almost like playing in the big league) :) So, does it exist a small (and cheap) stereo sampler that has triggerpads? One that can give instant access to 10-20 different 10 sec. samples? surfjunkie
i'll bet they use laptops. if you go to a sporting event (i like nba), wander around the arena before the game and check out the gear. fun stuff! the sound guy is probably hidden in the rafters somewhere. i'll bet he's got at least one computer, and probably a modest rack. for mac, there's a program called "sound byte". any sounds you want to use (i think it is wav & mp3, might be only wav) are put into a... a table i guess, or chart. each sound has a "slot", mouse-click on any to start or stop. i think "sound byte lyte" is free or shareware. the classic sounds: star trek noises fred flintstone running crowds cheering or booing (too easy...) little kids cheering or booing (better...) your grandmother cheering or booing (sold!) stalone or arnold movie quotes (rent kindergarden cop- trust me) glass breaking/crashing car "D'oh!" rog951
My guess is they've got computers up there with stuff all cued-up and ready to go for whenever certain situations arise (like playing "Man in the Box" when there's a penalty). Pretty sure that's the way the wacky morning dj's do sound effects, etc these days...all digital; it's probably some guy's job to sit there and coordinate all that stuff and push the right button at the right time. They used to use carts (tape cartridges) for little sound/music clips WAY back in the old days :) Anyway, it'd be neat to hear from someone who actually does the arena sound for sporting events...I bet somebody on here at least knows someone who does it... GO CAPS!!!!!!!!!!! Eleventh place baby!!!! None more black.
Hayman
Thanks, "Sound Byte" looks perfect. I also got a mail with this information: 360 Systems "Instant Replay" http://www.360systems.com/docs/prod_ir_main.html Richard
Anderton
Why not Minidisc? Small, instant access, lots of recording time, good reliability, cheaper to have a backup MD than a backup computer... GO CAPS!!!!!!!!!!! Eleventh place baby!!!!
OK, here goes. I played keys for the Mighty Ducks hockey team first few seasons...(Peggy Dusquesnel and I played the games on alternate days) There's a team way up in the rafters of the press boxes providing all the sounds and songs you hear. A DJ provides the canned tunes via DigiCarts and CD (at least that's how it was when I left). The Show Director calls 'em, and the Engineer makes it sound good. A keyboardist does the live performances, of course. But the keyboardist also triggered some of the sound effects, depending on what was needed. We were using a Roland sampler, loaded up with a variety of crashes and fx programmed to trigger on the lower octave of the JV-1000. We also had sequences ready to load when necessary (although the show director understood that those took a few more seconds to load), usually left one up and ready to go at any time, and we used the Voce organ module for that famous "da-da-da- da da dah!!!!! and such. BTW, professional sports have rules about what and when we can and cannot play - your situation is a little different! I'd recommend burning a CD or bringing a DAT with your favorite fx and tunes for quick start, when necessary. A minidisk would work well, too. You know, I still get a kick out of saying that I "played for a professional hockey team" (ummm - goalie? ;) lz www.lauriez.com [ 01-28-2002: Message edited by: lauriez@lauriez.com ] www.lauriez.com

Have you been to an NBA game lately?! Man, they've got stuff going ALL the time now. I was surprised cuz I thought that, like hockey, you had to stop the noise as soon as play began. I think it might be in the rules but they've just kinda let it slide the last year or two... None more black.
