russrags
Hey PopMusic, I'm not aware of the book your looking for, but I've got a cool story. I've gotten to work with Henry Mancini a few times at Westlake Audio with him and his buddy Blake Edwards. At Evergreen Studio's I got to work with him on a John Ritter movie (I can't think of the name of it right now ???) where we recorded the largest orchestra I've ever done...138 pieces!! It took two days just to run all the AC, lights, mics, and chairs and music stands for everyone. I think it was Jeff Pacarro on that session as well. That's pretty cool I think, but ..... the REALLY cool part is that Mr. Mancini and I lived in the same neighborhood and we hung out at the same bar in South Passadena. Many times I've sat right on the bar stool next to him just being guys. I wish we could still do that. Anyway good luck finding out what your looking for .. I had to jump in there as Henry Mancini dosen't pop up very often in this form. Russ
russrags
Yep "Skin Deep" that's the one. If I could only pick one song to listen to for the rest of my life, I'd have to think real hard, but "Moon River" might be the one. Russ

G. Ratte
What I'm wondering is if Mr. Mancini gives a lot of insight into the way he hears things, and the kinds of decisions he makes with his arranging and why Has anybody read it? Is it a by-the-numbers orchestral arranging textbook or is it something more than that?
hoo! Yes, I've got it and dig it a lot. The text is a bit thin, it's mostly charts but yeah.. he runs down how he likes to do things and there are plenty of examples. The CD is really good too, little snippets of examples from his work. My fave Mancini tune is "Solder In The Rain", the version he did with Doc Severenson... way better than the movie soundtrack one, IMO. Got the 4 CD box set as a Christmas present to myself too this year, kicks ass. G. Ratte' G. Ratte' http://www.cultdeadcow.com
g.
Can hardly remember specifics, other than I felt I was being let into a Shangrila of orchestrating secrets adn shortcuts, and that there was a bunch of THICK hard vinyl examples. This was the stuff! Too bad there isn't a Gil Evans one too! <-- greenboy ---<<<< straight from Rimsky-Korsakov .
