Oh, I can still take stairs two or three at a time... rather than take the motorized stairs, I usually run up and down the normal stairs. It's not my legs that are the problem for me, it's the gut. :( And sadly, the smoking. So I've got it twice as hard, because I plan on quitting that as of the first of the year too. In for a penny, in for a pound. ;)

So is everyone gonna modify eating or be more active/exercise or both?

The way to lose weight is simple in theory, harder to implement. Increase activity, reduce caloric intake. You can lean it towards one side or the other, but ideally, you need to do both. For that weight loss to remain over the long term, it requires a lifestyle change more than a "diet". Diets usually fail because after the weight is lost, people revert back to old habits.

So the bottom line ladies, if we want to remain physically fit by next Christmas, is that we're going to have to take a long term / lifestyle change approach and modify our dietary habits and physical activity levels and make them a part of our "new" lifestyle, and not treat it as a short term "diet" or weight loss program.

Hi all,

When I was younger (16-21) I was 6', 130 lbs... Way too skinny. I got married when I was 22 and since then (10 years) I'd put on about 70 lbs. Not horrible, but not what I wanted to see. You'll have to picture this: skinny legs, very narrow shoulders and all that weight right in the midsection. Over the summer I took a good look at myself and realized that wasn't what I wanted to look like.

I've been (loosely) on the South Beach diet for a few months, and I've lost 4" around my widest point -- the "Wisconsin tumor" as PBBPaul put it :) I'm right around 180-185 now, and I still get to eat most of my favourite foods.

For exercise, a brisk half-hour walk a day is sufficient for most. More is better, of course, but most people can find a half-hour per day.

I'm no dietician, nor am I afilliated with the South Beach diet; your results may vary ;)

Sorry for being so long-winded. Good luck!

Not at all, DC...welcome to the forums! Are you, by chance, related to the musicplayer.com-famous Ross family of the Washington DC area? Just had to ask.

At any rate, Major O'Keefe's right, we're not talking about a "diet"...we're talking about a lifestyle change.

Any sort of activity is one of the keys to success. For me, during the summer, I had a lawnmower or rototiller in my hand a lot of the time, but, that activity has dwindled. We tend to have cold, but not too snowy winters here in Kansas City, so, winter sports aren't looking real promising. But, you can always walk. If it's 5 below, go to the nearest mall and join the AARP mall-walking set. Walking or jogging is good...indoor tennis, racquetball, or just a local men's league (or ladies' league) basketball is good. For those with a bit more tenacity, stuff like martial arts is great. I don't think there's a better cardio workout in the world for endurance and flexibility.

As for dieting, I personally am not into trying to eliminate a major food group, so I won't be joining the carb-avoiders. I read something in a health mag somewhere that said the most popular diets, and the ones that really work, are the ones individuals come up with, tailored to their individual needs. The key is to cut the calories...and these days it's easier than ever.

I'm in! Too much fancy foods, cheese, meat, these way too yummy Holiday Beers!

I'm staying off beer, anything sopped with cheese, and fatty cuts of meat after Xmas. Then back on to the fancy eliptical machine collecting dust in the garage.

I'll be starting at 210. I think. No scale until after Christmas for me. ;)

Well, as I mentioned, my Doctors are happy with my weight, particularly because I've been able to hold it.

That being said, I feel like I'd like to be back at that 185 lbs of twisted steel and sex appeal I used to be.

I'll have it a bit easier than most because my career change dictates a certain amount of physical activity change. I'll be doing lots of walking. I have yet to know that the time line will be, but likely an hour a day, 5 days a week. It's an essential part of my marketing plan so I'll have a very strong incentive. I also believe that once this thing is up an going I'll get a family membership in the local workout site.

So i just made my lunch for tomorrow.

1) Lay a flour tortilla flat on a plate.

2) arrange some whole beans from the can (red, black, pinto, garbanzo, whatever) so that they cover one half, and are exactly 1 bean deep all the way across.

3) Bury it in shredded monterey jack and chedder blend :D

4) heat for about 20 secs, fold in half, heat for another 20 secs.

One should end up with a thin taco-shaped device that's been "glued together" by the cheese.

5) allow to cool and refrigerate.

I've worked it out to about 315 calories give or take. I only eat one for lunch, and wash it down with 2 sodas which are 160 calories each.

This is something i've been doing for about 2 weeks now, in leu of fast food and/or t.v. dinner type microwave foods. I might try swapping out one of the sodas for water.

The only problem is that when i make them at night to take them to work the next day, i smell them cooking and i want to eat about 2 of them

The way i see it, most of us probably don't have to eliminate some things from our diets, but maybe not eat so damn much of everything. Our stomachs will shrink and we'll feel just as full eating a smaller portion.

Just like when my family cut out most of the salt in our diets when i was growing up. After about 5 weeks food tasted the same as it did before (sometimes better) because our taste buds recalibrated. The added bonus was that we ate much less of things like Doritos or potato chips because they were just too overbearing.

Btw, i haven't actually weighed myself in a while. I'm only guessing on the 190lbs bit...

Geez... I would KILL to have some of the "weight problems" I've just read about. I haven't seen under 200 lbs. since I was a high school sophomore. (Bear in mind that I'm 6'2" and big boned, and 225 would be about right for me.)

I don't even want to tell you exactly how much I weigh; suffice it to say it's over 300. It's time for the "sporadic" exercise program to become regular, and avoid the bad carbs, excessive fat, and (sob) beer.

I'm very active and I still gig a lot, but my body just loves to hang on to every calorie it takes in. Good evolutionary feature; bad 21st century drawback.

Well, of course "big boned" folks always look more "sturdy", which is different than being FAT.

Sometimes i wish i were big boned instead- I notice that monsters like you don't ever seem to suffer from some of the stuff i do- tendonitis, back problems, random fatigue, etc.

Well, man, it sure looks like I've started something here! :D:thu: ...and it doesn't need to be a negative thing. We're all about supporting one another. Hey, if you weigh over 300 lbs, that's fine! Okay, I'll fess up, four years ago I was over 280. If I don't watch it, I could easily get back to that, and I'm not gonna do it. I got down to 230...then fall of 2003 I dropped it down to 210. Now I can see it wanting to creep back up, and I'm saying not only NO but HELL NO.

We're in this together guys. No coronaries for us. Do what you can...you don't want to lose 15 lbs a week, that's not healthy. A nice steady drop of 5 lbs a month or so would be cool.

But, of course, remember, those of us who are heavier will have more a rapid weight redux at the onset, but, it does seem to be true that those who are, say, only 10-15 lbs overweight are going to have a harder time of it.

I'll do my best to loose some weight, summed to what I lost this year. I was using 38 pants... ... I'm 36 now and then I'll be 34 very soon...

Y'know, I started gaining weight when I quit smoking. Problem is, no one comes up and says "Hey Ted, your lungs are looking GREAT!!! Nice, pink and healthy, not all full of brown tobacco crap". No one says that. They say (nudge nudge, wink wink) "Wifey feeding you well, eh?"

I think one can do both. But, you do need a vice. Tell Mrs. Fang you're gonna turn yourself into a sex machine for her, but you'll need something in return (ahem...cough)... ;)

Ummm, I know you're all gonna hate me for this, but if I go face and eyes into a workout regimen, I'll have to struggle to keep that weight on me in a month's time if I don't step up my eating as well.

I hear ya. I graduated in 1985 at 125 lbs. over the next few years I gained a needed ten pounds. Then suddenly in one year I gained 30-40 pounds all on my stomach. It was very noticable and even though I still weighed less than any of my friends they started mentioning it. I'm going to talk to my doctor to see what weight I should be at.

I agree that eliminating a certain food group won't do it for me. I could actually just eat much less instead of gourging myself at every meal. A side benefit is that I will save a lot of money! I enjoy going for walks with my dogs and I can just keep a faster pace so excercise is taken care of.

I suggest that everybody update this thread (or a new one dedicated to the project) every week so we can encourage each other and see each other's progress. Maybe in six months we can even post before and after pics?

Say Phil,

I can still take stairs two at a time but I don't lightly bounce like I once did. Hard to be gracefull at around 20 pound overweight. I really miss not dragging around those two 10 pound dumbells everywhere I go. I've got my excess in the spare tire and a bit of manly hairy boobs. Shame you don't gain weight in your arms and sholders, eh? (At least I don't)

Didn't know you smoked. Thought I was the last one... Actually gave up the cigs around four years ago, but I got a pipe and tried all the blends and settled on Prince Albert as being the closest to what I was used to. It's cool in that it goes out so you don't just puff away for five minutes like with a cig. A bowl might last an hour with the re-lighting and all. Also, cigs stink and I didn't really notice till I got away from them. I light the pipe and people say; "Wow, at least something that smells good." It's also way way cheaper than the cigs too.

I just bring this up because quitting smoke and losing weight at the same time just hardly ever happens. The pipe is cool in that you can go putting it off until you're about to lose your mind and then have a puff or two and be better.

Yeah, I need to get a daily routine of PT going. Done it in the past, just need to sort doing it again. Gets harder with age. I'll be 47 this Friday.

I`m 6`3``. There was a time when I weighed 198. I think they say thats still too heavy. All I know is I felt pretty good around there, even going up to 210. However, friends and family said I looked sick at 198.

Now I weigh 250 and thats way too much. However, I have been running 3-4 times a week for the last month and am laying off carbs after about 3p.

Looking forward to seeing some positive results.

I'm with you, Whitefang. After the New Year (sorry, too much happening around the Flem household over the holidays), I'm in it for the long haul. 6'1, 229, smoking for 30 years, and a 25 year marriage breaking up, with my daughter and I moving out. With support from you other whack-jobs here on SSS, I may actually survive.

Ted, thanks for laying this thread on the masses. I wasn't looking forward to this, not in the slightest, but having it out there to look back on in the months ahead should be a positive step.

My goals: 180-190, smoke-free and abusive partner-free by June 1. I plan to stay the same height, however. Some things you just shouldn't tamper with.

R. Lee Ermey, give me strength!

Awright! Welcome on board everyone!

Music Room...I'm 5'11" and they say I should weigh 176. Yeah, right! If I could get down to 190 I'd be a very happy guy. Plus, I plan to get back into weights...which oughta make me look a bit more acceptable. If I were 176 I'd look like a freakin' scarecrow.

Flem, sad to hear about your breakup, but, it sounds as though it's for the best. Best of luck!
