Well...

Gus said "Hummm... even while half of your country -minus about 100k- voters and the rest of the civilized world might find this tale as a funny joke, this belongs to the SSS Political Party."

Honestly, I think lots of people are still stressed out over the election. To add to that stress we've got:

painfull memories of 9/11

the war in Iraq and the deaths of our young men

a crazy economy that's pretty unpredictible right now

the holidays and all the stress that goes with them

a perception that moral values are degrading faster than ever

Martha's in jail while many others who SHOULD be are not

and on and on...

Frankly, the joke has been around before and it wasn't all that funny the first time.

I think that if people still want to talk about this topic, they will make the effort to go to the Political Forum. In SSS, many/most of us just don't want to be reminded of the election and of all the additional stress we have to put up with everyday.

I could be wrong, but that's why I think the thread was closed. Let's move on.

You are not wrong. Politics belongs in the political forum, and that includes political jokes, which are a subset of politics.

Nothing personal, that's just the way the delineations are set up.

So, when a joke is about Bush, Powell or Blair, it's automatically a political subject I suppose?

Whe have a primeminister who happen to look like Harry Potter and when jokes are being made about him, nobody gets uptight here.

My original post about the dumbness of G.W. was copy/pasted from a Dutch hi fi forum and to be honest, the joke isn't bad is it?

But I guess you guys are a little over sensitive?

Stop the bullshit Sign before the rest of the europeans onhere get stabbed in the back again.

Political shit belongs in the political forum.

The fact that we dutch are more liberated than most other people has nothing to do with this thread being in the wrong place.

A fellow dutchman got killed 6 weeks ago because someone who didnot think alike thought he said too much remember?

Fact is,... we can take shitloads and even laugh when jokes are made about our own mothers(if they're funny that is). And other people in other cultures think different and get upset about stuff like that.

So,...politics in the political corner where they belong. I allways hang around Craigs spot just because politics are not allowed here.

Yep. We're over sensitive to people who don't understand political topics (And jokes about politicians are inherently political, as Craig already mentioned.) belong in the political forum.

And while I would admit Americans in general, ought to have much better knowledge of the world outside their borders, I hardly think the you'd find even a preponderance of highly educated U.S. citizens who would know what the Dutch prime minister looks like. Explain to me, in a PM please, why we should care what he looks like. With all due respect, Dutch politics are pretty inconsequential to the lives of most Americans.

Booshy, my good brother, you're right and your post makes a lot of sense.

How could I be so stoopid to post something about G.W. on Craigs board.

It musta been that I don't like the political forum, to much hassle, namecalling and tasteless people there.

My apologies for being so dumb and stoopid, I'd never thought about what reactions a joke probably would get here.

BTW, do you know the joke about the $50 parrot?

If the joke had been about Tony Blair, or John Kerry, or Fidel Castro, I would have said the same thing.

It has nothing to do with sensitivity and everything to do with context. The ground rules here are very loose, but the one rule is NO POLITICS in this forum. That's why a separate forum was created. I bet you won't find any drummer jokes in Time's forums on current events.

Musician jokes, on the other hand, are welcome here!

And BTW, Dutch politics SHOULD matter to Americans, as should the politics of other countries. There's a lot we can learn about ourselves by seeing through the eyes of others.

I think you missed my point, Craig.

It wasn't to say that Dutch politics are unimportant (either to the Dutch or within the world community), but most Americans have more than they can digest just keeping abreast of their own local, state, and national politics plus the politics of countries we have active issues with to worry about what the Dutch foreign minister looks like, let alone make jokes about his looks.

Everyone can learn something by examining other cultures and the politics of their countries. But to suggest that a large number of Americans will know much at all about Dutch politics is as silly as expecting large numbers of Los Angeles, California residents to know much about the politics of Bangor, Maine or Sioux Falls, South Dakota. It isn't going to be much of a priority and you can hardly blame people for that. Like it or not, the Dutch are hardly a powerhouse economic or political force to be reckoned with.

I don't want to mingle in any political discussions but facts and history have proven different.

I should mention that the assassination of Van Gogh and Fortuyn (spelling?) made front page news in the United States. While certainly we focus on local political change locally, Dutch politics have a great deal of impact on everyone.

And I would agree that anything political should go in the appropriate forum. It has nothing to do with who's overly sensitive to what. I might even think it's funny, I don't know, but it really should go in the proper forum. Thanks!!

I actually wasn't addressing you specifically, but using your comment as a take-off point to present a related concept that your comment inspired. I know what you mean about most people being overwhelmed, but then again, a lot of people spend their time on "junk news" (I really don't care what Julia Roberts named her babies) that could be better spent on hard news.

I have no clue what the Dutch foreign minister looks like, and would not "get" any jokes about him anyway. But there are some interesting things going on there that hold lessons for us, like the immigration issues that are coming to a head -- Holland's population density is REALLY dense, lots of people packed into a small space, so the immigation s*it is hitting the fan sooner than some other places. Also, the recent killing of a prominent, conservative filmmaker is of interest as well.

Holland is also the home of Philips, and is pretty much energy self-sufficient because they have vast deposits of natural gas. The other thing is that we can look to Holland to see what lessons can be learned from their permissive attitude about pot. For example, a lot of Americans think that pot is legal over there; it is not. It is "permitted." So if you're really obnoxious, they can still call you on it. But if you're just sitting in a cafe in Amsterdam smoking a joint on your birthday, no one cares.

So yeah, there's stuff going on over there...it's also interesting to see what happened in Switzerland when they decided to deal with the heroin problem by making it available to junkies. But that's another story for another time :)

My basic attitude is that we can learn from others who are facing similar problems, and may be ahead of, or behind, the curve compared to us in terms of solving or not solving them.

Agreed, Craig

I guess I should've simply pointed out to sign that we make fun of our elected leaders all the time in the U.S., with no problem either. But, as you said, political jokes on this forum always seem to inspire additional commentary that inevitably gets out of hand and very political.

Sign, we (as in the entire population of the U.S. that you seem to be mocking) are not oversensitive. But some people are (and I think you're fooling yourself if you believe some Dutch don't get upset about mean jokes regarding your prime minister) and your joke serves as political baiting.

Neil, I have apologised a couple of posts back, I didn't realise the joke was bait for some persons.

And I really like most Americans, you guys are honest and you're admitting when you're wrong (in general) I like that. Many Dutch peeps are stubborn, but you can find great people everywhere. OTOH the Dutch are very open and humorous, I mean, look at Booshy. :P

Peace.

You're using Booshy as an example of which attitude? Open and humorous or stubborn?? :D
