Eight Crazy Nights...

Wasn't that a song by the Beatles?

To our Jewish forum buddies and buddettes...eat way too much, and collect a whole bunch of goodies. Neil, we expect to see some cute pics of Lilly with her Hanukkah loot. :D

I fried a huge batch of latkes last night. Potatoes, onions, eggs, a bit of flour, salt...run everything in a food processor and fry in oil. There's 2 schools of latkes making: one where the mixture is smooth, another where the potatoes are shredded like hash browns. I alternate. Later this week, I might make some with sweet potatoes & white potatoes. I've seen latkes made with zucchini, with beets, and with mixed root vegetables, too.

In Israel, sufganiot (doughnuts, usually jelly doughnuts) are a traditional Hanukkah treat. So, head to Krispy Kreme and celebrate. :D

My kids are getting a big surprise later this week. We're taking them to see the Barenaked Ladies holiday concert in Buffalo. Our whole family likes them. Small venue, great seats (about 12th row). As I mentioned in the "Christmas song thread", BnL have a holiday album that has a few Hanukkah songs including an original one from singer Stephen Page.

The Hanukkah Song

Adam Sandler

-------------------

Intro: This is a song, that uh, theres alot of Xmas songs out there,

but not too many about Hanukkah, so I wrote a song for all those

nice little Jewish kids who dont get to hear any Hanukkah songs--here we go...

[A] Put on your [E] yalmulka, [D] here comes [E] Hanukkah

Its [A] so much [E] fun-akkah to [D] celebrate [E]Hanukkah,

[A]Hanukkah [E]is the [D] Festival of [E] Lights,

[A] Instead of one day of [E] presents, we have [bm] eight [D] crazy [E] nights.

[A] When you feel like the only [E] kid in town with[D]out a Xmas [E]tree,

[A] Heres a list of [E] people who are Jewish, [D] just like you and [E] me:

[A] David Lee [E] Roth [D] lights the me[E]norrah,

[A] So do James [E] Caan, Kirk Douglas, and the [D] late Dinah [E]Shore-ah

[A] Guess who eats to[E]gether at the [D] Karnickey [E] Deli,

[A] Bowzer from [E] Sha-na-na, and [D] Arthur Fonzer[E]relli.

[A] Paul Newmans half [E] Jewish; [D] Goldie Hawns half [E] too,

[A] Put them to[E]gether--what a [D] fine lookin [E] Jew! [Esus] [E]

[D] You dont need Deck the Halls or Jingle Bell Rock

[E] Cause you can spin the dreidl with Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock--both Jewish! [Esus]

[A] Put on your [E] yalmulka, its [D] time for [E] Hanukkah,

The [A] owner of the Seattle Super[E]sonic-ahs [D] celebrates [E] Hanukkah.

[A] O.J. [E] Simpson--[D] not a [E] Jew!

But [A] guess who [E]is...Hall of [D] Famer--Rod [E]Carew--(he converted!) [bm]

[A] We got Ann [E] Landers and her [D] sister Dear Ab[E]by,

[A] Harrison Fords a [E] quarter Jewish--[D] not too [E] shabby!

[A] Some people [E] think that [D] Ebeneezer [E] Scrooge is,

Well, hes [A] not, but [E] guess who is: [D] All three [E] stooges. [Esus] [E]

[D] So many Jews are in show biz--

[E] Tom Cruise isn¹t, [tacit] but I heard his agent is. [Esus]

[A] Tell your friend Ver[E]onica, its [D] time you celebrate [E] Hanukkah

I [A] hope I get a har[E]monica, on this [D] lovely, lovely [E] Hanukkah.

So [A] drink your gin-and-[E]tonic-ah, and [D]smoke your mara[E]juanic-ah,

If you [A] really, really [E]wanna-kah, Have a [D] happy, happy, [E] happy, happy [A] Hanukkah.

I thought Adam Sandler's song was pretty darn funny. I hope you do too. :)

Unfortunately, there are some folks who didn't.

Here\'s an interesting article about the song.

Geez, I think the Sandler song is hilarious and so do all the other Jews I know. There's certainly room for more than one Hanukkah song! Just like there are humorous/irreverent Christmas songs as well as sacred ones. It's all good.

Anyway, I'm all about the latkes myself. And the GELT! :D Happy Hanukkah to all ye fellow tribe members. :)

I used to work at a Garden Center located in a predominantly Jewish area. During Christmas time we had a hard time selling trees, imagine that. So my entrepreneurial 15-year old self put up a sign advertising "Hanukkah Bushes! You pick it, we trim it"......Didn't go over too well. Ah wel live and learn.

Anyway, to all Jesuits... Happy Hanukkah

Peace and Blessings,

James

Maybe you'd have had better luck if you lit the "bushes" on fire... y' can't get much more Jewish than that! :D

I think we should all address the lack of Hanukkah songs by taking a popular Christmas song and turning it into a Hanukkah song... i.e.

"Silver Bells" could become "Silverberg's Bells"

I think someone did a song "Oy to the World"...

...or something. Anyone else?

Marvin's a great guy. Please tell him "hi" for me!

I guess I'm honorary Jewish, my wife is Jewish and so we celebrate both Hanukkah and Christman...an idea that really appeals to my daughter . But it has made me more aware of what Judaism is about, the traditions, all that...and I have some Muslim friends who have made me aware of what that religion can be in the hands of good people.

I just hope we all manage to live together more harmoniously. Yeah, not an original thought, I know. But good people express themselves in good ways, regardless of the medium they choose. Rather than trying to convince others that a particular religion is correct, I think it's more important to find out what makes people fanatics, and figure out how to tone them down a bit.

A great thought, especially given that this is December 8th... :(

For all of you who are in a jewish/non-jewish relationship, this website is for you:

http://www.chrismukkah.com/

Tonight at sundown....

Chrismukkah begins!

18 days of food, festivities, family

and lots and lots of presents!

What exactly is Chrismukkah?

Chrismukkah is a "state of mind" for this hybrid holiday season. It's a gumbo of favorite traditions from both Hanukkah and Christmas. Chrismukkah is celebrated by intermarried couples, interfaith families with both Jewish and Christian members, people with partial Jewish heritage... or anyone who just feels like it. Chrismukah is a festive celebration of diversity and tolerance - a fresh way to describe how millions of us already experience the Merry Mishmash of a holiday. The most recent UJC survey counted 5.2 million Jewish people in America. It found that of those who were married, nearly 1/3rd had wed non-Jews. Further, nearly half who have tied the knot within the past 5 years, married non-Jewish spouses. For more details, here's a copy of the latest Chrismukkah press release.

Have you heard of this?

Happy Hanukah to all.

Last night I went to pick up Lilly early so we could attend the lighting of a 16ft tall Chanukiah at the Tennessee state capitol. When I arrived at her after-school care at the JCC (Jewish Community Center), they were about to begin their own, 8ft. Chanukiah lighting. Lilly was with several friends from her kindergarten class and had a wonderful time. Then, we jumped in the car and headed into town.

The capitol lighting was attended by about 50 people. Lilly enjoyed singing songs, but most of all holding her own candle as a symbolic connection between everyone there. They lit a candle at one end of the group and each person lit the next persons candle, until finally the candle used to light the menorah was lit. Lilly was amused by the rabbi getting into the bucket of a cherry picker to be hoisted to the top of the 16 foot Chanukiah. :D

Then we piled back in the car and drove home to light our own Chanukiah.

This is going to be my new avatar:

And this one is of two of our Chanukiahs. Notice the design of the unlit menorah. ;)

Sorry about the size. I don't have time to resize it again, right this minute. (The avatar sized one is not big enough to show the menorahs.)
