Vocoder and bass as an input

So I understand the bassics of how your vocoder works using a synth or guitar as an input source but I would like to know if it would work with a bass as an input or would it's frequencies be too low for the vocoder filters to work with? I think a low B is about 30 hz +/-.

Also... is there an easy mod to let me use my 70s something Gnome as an effects unit to run my bass through? Dug it out from 25 years of stuff back at the folks house and just gotta have some fun with it. Still works but the funky plastic film is pretty much shot.
