ABECK Posted November 4 Posted November 4 Somewhat obscure, but I VIVDLY remember when this was on the MTV awards. I taped it and watched it over and over. Eddie Harsh's piano is mixed so well for a 2 guitar hard rock band. That Korg SG-1 rides nicely on top of that mix. The breakdown absolutely blew me away at the time - especially when he kicks the wah on with the Wurlitzer. I started looking at Rhodes and Wurlies very differently after seeing this. 2
Sundown Posted November 5 Posted November 5 My number one favorite performance of all time is Ike and Tina Turner on the Ed Sullivan Show. That soundstage had an awesome reverb, and the energy and excitement of this performance is unmatched (in my view). 1 Sundown Finished: Gateway, The Jupiter Bluff, Condensation, Apogee Working on: Driven Away, Backscatter, Eighties Crime Thriller Main axes: Kawai MP11 and Kurz PC361 DAW Platform: Cubase
Sundown Posted November 5 Posted November 5 A few others I like, some from the same soundstage: The James Brown medley, on the Ed Sullivan Show: The Doors, from the Ed Sullivan Show: This is more sentimental than anything else, but I loved when ABWH did “Heart of the Sunrise”. It was originally released on a promo VHS years before “An Evening of Yes Music Plus” became available. And I wore the hell out of that VHS … True, it doesn’t include Chris Squire and that’s tragic especially for this track, but Tony Levin did a great job with a fretless. And yes, Rick’s D-50 tonewheel hasn’t aged well (and he’s got a C-3 in that stage rig to his right), but it’s still a great performance from the band. It’s the last time I can remember Steve Howe smiling and really getting into it. And his Gibson sounds fantastic… And last, I’ve always enjoyed Kevin Cronin and REO doing “Ridin’ the Storm Out”. My favorite version is the 1977 recording on “The Hits”, but this performance is close. 2 Sundown Finished: Gateway, The Jupiter Bluff, Condensation, Apogee Working on: Driven Away, Backscatter, Eighties Crime Thriller Main axes: Kawai MP11 and Kurz PC361 DAW Platform: Cubase

16251 Posted November 5 Posted November 5 Seeing prime Weather Report, either concert, would of been a great memory. I did see Joe Zawinul at Scullers in Boston. (I was sitting 10 feet from him and admiring his T8 and a full line of volume pedals.) 1 AvantGrand N2 | ES520 | Gallien-Krueger MK & MP | https://soundcloud.com/pete36251
CEB Posted November 5 Posted November 5 personal favorite…. This ranks up there. An old standard many of us played in our lives beginning in grade school Jazz bands. Oscar plays it slow and he and Niels groove hard. I love NH0P’s tone. There are flashier versions by like brother Mitch said, ‘It doesn’t have to be difficult to be cool’. But it is Oscar. 1 "It doesn't have to be difficult to be cool" - Mitch Towne "A great musician can bring tears to your eyes!!! So can a auto Mechanic." - Stokes Hunt
Sundown Posted November 8 Posted November 8 Here’s another gem: My personal favorite of this track is 1979 St. Louis, MO, but this 1977 recording from Japan is still great.
