OT just gettin my snowblower ready

Recommended Posts

I'm feeling down and out. Winter's coming. I just took my snowblower in for a tune up. I hate winter. I hate cold. I hate snow. I hate snow sports. My wife and daughter will not move. I thought they loved me  sniff. So, I've decided to change careers. I've had it with too much time in ND. No more business finance for me. I despise office work. I hate suits and ties. I don't know how to kiss ass properly. I just don't fit in there. I'm going to succum to depression if I don't make a change. So, I'm off to a truck drivers school. I'll be done just before Chrismas and I've lined up an over the road job. I'll be passing through each of y'alls areas at some time or another. I'll toot the horn. Gotta get a lot of miles because I wanna put away some money. There's darn good money in that industry if you can stand the road life. I'm a perfect fit. Of course, I'll have sat. tv and sat. internet in my truck, along with a refrigerator and a microwave and a practice amp for my guit. My main concern is how to be healthy on the road. I rarely drink, I don't use illegal drugs, I don't gamble, I don't fraternise with hoes. I have all the business and accounting savvy to maximize my profits out there, but how to stay healthy? I've got to get excersise during my rest periods and I've got to find ways to eat healthy on the road. And a person has to stay hygenic. I'm going to have to discover the best truck stops to rent a shower in. Any health tips when traveling from all you traveling bands?

Six days on the road and I'm a gonna make it home tonight...

Hey, rather than being a longhauler (time away from family) how about trying for a shorter route, like a beer truck, bread truck, something like that...or some more regional hauls. The money might not be as good. You might want to consider something like UPS or FedEx too.

If you want to drive a long haul semi, being an owner operator might be the best way to make money. But semis aren't cheap.

No money in short hauling. A local firm has offered me work once I get 100,000 miles in my log book. They short haul fuel and I'd be home every night. Its at about half the money though. Corporations like UPS and FedEx are too strict for me. They'd fire me before I got my feet wet. I'm hiring on with a local firm and running all lower 48 and maybe some Canadian. An experienced trucker can make as much as 44 cents per mile as a company employee. At 3000 miles per week, with 2 weeks off per year, thats $66,000 plus per diem allowances. All expenses paid by the company.

With 1 good year under your belt, you can get into a lease to own on your own rig with minimal or no money down. Then you start making from 85 cents per mile to $1.05 per mile depending on fuel allowances. Of course, you would then need to figure in your own expenses. I've spent a lot of the last three months talking to OTR drivers and took a trip with one. He showed me his W2. He works for Allied Van Lines as an independent. He was netting an after expense six figure income. He was working on a percentage of the load income as opposed to mileage and it was working great for him.

One thing I know for sure. You cannot made good money on the road if you are not serious about it. Each trip has to milked for every penny. Its a business. You cannot spend. You drive, stop and rest when you must (by law and by how tired you are), and drive more. If you take time out for bars, casinos, and hookers, your career is toast. A good firm will get you home once a week or nearly that often. A lousy firm will constantly have you out 10-14 days at a time.

Robert, I have a much happier view towards winter once I left ND (but I love skiing, and you say you don't ;) ). I dated a gal who left nursing to become a truck driver, it just suites some personalities, and she made good money (although she's now a programmer). Good luck! Unload your trailer by hand and repack it every night, that'll keep ya healthy!

Haul hazardous materials. Those guys make real good money. Of course, if you haul radioactive waste you might notice your balls glowing at night. But as long as you're done having kids, I don't see a problem. :D

Truck'n could be fun, I guess. A loner like me could probably get into it. My problem would be the fast food. That stuff would kill me. I'm a lousy enough eater as it is.

There is a certain charm about driving long haul. You get to see a lot of places. Of course, it's interstate, which kind of all looks the same. But, you can still see lots of beauty in the landscape.

I just recently drove through Wisconsin, to and from Minnesota, and it was a really nice drive. Wisconsin is a beautiful state, especially when the leaves are starting to turn.

Good for you for getting out of the rat race and trying something new!

Me, I'm seriously considering becoming a heavy equipment operator. My son has a facination with any kind of earth movers he sees, and so we often stop to watch them working. It's kind of piqued my curiosity about what it would be like to run one of those big machines. I hear the money is really good too. I don't know much about it, but I've had it in the back of my mind for awhile now.
