Gear buying: 2024 Edition

I don’t remember if I mentioned it, but earlier this year, I bought my first piece of guitar gear in a while:

I bought it because shoegaze is one of my favorite sonic landscapes to explore.  I have enough pedals in my arsenal that I can get there with the right combination, but there’s something to be said for a specialized pedal.

Labor Day night, I bought my second:

In the context of my gear collection, this purchase is the polar opposite of the Soft Focus.  This will be my FIRST pedal based on the ProCo Rat.  If this pedal is as advertised, I’ll basically have a pedal that covers 9 different versions of the Rat.

And with that logic in mind, a few hours later, I also pulled the trigger on an If 6 Was 9:

Again, it’s a pedal that fills a conspicuous gap- my lack of a Fuzz Face style pedal.

You did post about getting it, but I believe that you hadn't tried it out yet...

I'd been wondering how you liked it!

I could get somewhat in the ballpark with my Strymon Flint (you'd LOVE its modulated " '80s Rack Hall Reverb"!). And I net some more involved reverb pedals could get even closer. However, judging by demo vids, it seems to RRREEEAALLLY NAIL the "Soft Focus" reverb patch of the Yamaha FX500, and even improve upon it. I RRREEEAALLLY WANT one, myself! It brings a huge wave of nostalgia up in my heart...

It'll be supercool following my El Capistan...

So, ya got ALL the Rats in one (looks sharp in white!), and a sophisticated, versatile silicon Fuzz Face, eh? Niiiiiiice...  :rawk:

Put one or the other through that Soft Focus Reverb, Maybe even stack the If 6 was 9 FF into the Pack Rat and thence the Soft Focus 'verb...

The If 6 was 9 sounds so good (and versatile) here, that maybe I wouldn't stack it into the Pack Rat! Maybe I'd just alternate them. I don't know just how clean or not-so-clean his amp was there, though...

Unfortunately, I still haven’t been able to try it out- my practice space is in massive disarray.  And the near future looks kinda murky.

But you’re thinking along the same lines I am.  I haven’t looked yet, but I wouldn’t be at all surprised to find a Rat or Fuzz Face in the signal chains of the guitarists from My Bloody Valentine, Curve, Jesus & Mary Chain and the other heavier shoegaze bands.

EDIT: took a peek at some of those guitarists on Equipboard found Rats, Muffs and a variety of other dirt pedals, some quite exotic (like Shin-E Fuzz-Wahs).

Yes indeed. Step to the Shin-ei FY-6 and FY-2 based fuzzes, and sometimes put a parked wah before or after. A Shin-ei (Univox?) Fuzz Wah pedal was used, which combined an FY-6 Super Fuzz circuit with a wah; I'm not sure which order the two were wired in, Fuzz > Wah or Wah > Fuzz...

My wonderful Wattson Classic Electronics EFY-6 Fuzz is a KILLER upgraded, modified FY-6 based design, that's SO aggressive when wound-up that it evokes My Bloody Valentine as much as or more than The Jesus and Mary Chain! Even a Sunn O))) Life pedal killer!

The guys in J&MC both used the Fuzz-Wah, and in an interview, said it did a LOT of the heavy lifting for their core sound.  More or less, it was plug in and there it was!

I think that wonky low-output pickups in their guitars had a bit to do with that equation, too. My Les Paul's hot, powerful ceramic humbuckers sound girthily HUGE and just ROARS through my FY-6 based EFY-6 Fuzz; by comparison, the J&MC Fuzz Wah tone is thinner. The wah side is probably also part of it. And I suspect that my EFY-6 has a wider range of gain on-tap. I'll hafta try it with my wah sometime, to see if it delivers more of that Psychocandy sound. And then there's mics and their placement, the amps, etc. etc. etc.... Either way, it's a keeper for me and gets me MY kind of fuzz sound!

I might have to look into a Wattson EFY-6 Fuzz…

EDIT: Yeahhhhhh…

If you dig that Wattson FY-6 Fuzz demoed in that video, you'd really love the Wattson EFY-6 (sometimes mislabeled EYF-6, as was mine). It adds a full-range control in place of the 2-way Tone switch, and a full-range Fuzz to Octave-Fuzz blend control, all in a more compact, pedalboard-friendly square enclosure.

J8jI3Uf.jpg

I believe that there were (are?) 'reissues' of the Shin-ei Fuzz Wah and others from that line, but if memory serves they were rather pricey.

If I could not have found my EFY-6 (they're a little uncommon), my first choice for an FY-6 and  FY-2 fuzz (both in one!) would have been the Super Unpleasant Companion Nouveau from Fredric Effects.

Now... don't you already have one or another or even more than one FY-6 and/or FY-2 based fuzz, probably from Solid Gold FX or Catalinbread... ?

Good memory, Caev!

I bought a SolidGold FX Sasori pedal a while back, which is based on the Shin-ei FY-2 Companion Fuzz.  Really good at nailing that late 60s “acid” fuzz tone.

I remember they made them in a lot of different colors. but like the EQD Terminal Fuzz, it was discontinued.
