Will the Radial Key Largo ever support iPads?

Recommended Posts

I bought one after watching the videos and reading the reviews highlighting all of the connectivity options. I must have missed the parts that said it was not compatible with iPads. I sent it back, since it didn't do anything that my current system couldn't do. Anybody from Radial here? Thanks.

Oh wow, it's not class compliant?

Check out something like this instead, it also provides a great mixer app for iOS as well making it very powerful standalone.. (I have this interface).

"Does the Key Largo support iOS devices?

The Key-Largo is not supported by iOS devices. The USB connection on the Key-Largo was designed to be connected to laptop or a computer with a USB port. We do have other products, however, that will work with iOS devices such as the BT-Pro and the SB-5"

Yes, but on recent iPads we simply use a USB-C hub to get USB ports.  On older models there is the camera connection kit.

I have a Key Largo (which I use with a MacBook) and a usb-c iPad.  What I don’t have yet is a hub.  I’d be happy to test this once I get my hands on a hub.

Interesting, so it has some type of class compliance you're saying? Just because you can connect it doesn't mean it automatically works, unless it's fully USB class compliant.

I’ve used key largo w/ 2018 usb-c iPad Pro + Apple adapter successfully. It doesn’t transmit USB MIDI but the midi-din on side of key largo handles that. I use it for iPad audio often but midi only a few times. — p.s. going to hook it up tomorrow and make sure it works. Will post if not.

They require a driver on Windows but not on macOS.   What does that mean, well - it would seem they are happy with its performance using the class compliant drivers in macOS but not on Windows (that is my guess).  Or, it is not fully class compliant, which Octa is suggesting as it works with his iPad for USB audio but not MIDI.

Sounds odd, but as long as it actually works I guess no questions asked...

Hmm.  The Key Largo requires no driver on macOS and has its own DC power supply.     What’s happens when you try it on iPad Os or iOS?

Something like "OS not recognized". I was surprised and disappointed when I discovered this. It is a beautiful piece of gear, but just did not do what I needed, therefore the expense was not justified. I wanted to midi to my iPad so I could use Korg Module Pro as a tone module. No dice.

For me it was about having midi send and audio over USB. Not everybody takes a laptop to gigs, but everybody takes iPads.

There's bunches of class compliant usb audio interfaces with midi, as two of the ones I have, UA Volt2 and the Steinberg UR44c, which both also provide their own power, which is a constraint as with some interfaces you would need a powered USB hub when using them with an iPad.

Thanks for your response. I'll look into the products you mention. I played a show on Thursday where I used an AV RCA to XLR direct box by connecting it to the headphone plug, and using a midi to din cable with a Lightening connector to connect to my iPad, and played the string reduction book with a brass choir, playing the strings from the Orchestral Dreams package from the Korg Module Pro, controlled by my Hammond Sk1. It worked beautifully. I think Radial missed a sizable market by not building in iPad compatibility.

Tested just now (using Pianoteq and B-3X) and USB-c iPad works well with Key Largo, with Apple adapter and identically with just a cheap USB-c to USB-b cable. This requires MIDI DIN from keyboard to Key Largo.

It doesn't do USB audio with Lightning iPad or iPhone 13. It will do just midi, when I use the Apple adapter that has the extra Lightning charge your iPhone/iPad option.

The Steinberg also includes DSP, and provides a bunch of realtime plugins in the app as well, very convenient, the app can also have two different headphone/output mixes, can be useful for FOH/Monitor in parallel...

To clarify, you were able to control Pianoteq and BX-3 by connecting a midi din to from your controller to the midi in din on the Key Largo, connect you source to the usb plug on your Key Largo, and and send midi out to the sound source. Correct?

Yes. It works this way with USB-c iPad but not Lightning devices.

And with a Lightning iPad and the Apple Camera Kit + a powered USB hub? Any difference, ie. audio too or still only midi?

Unfortunately, I don't have a regular powered USB hub around here to test with. For a hub I use an LG monitor, which works well with M1 MacBook Air and also likes USB-c iPad, but the LG isn't recognizing Lightning devices. A powered hub made for use with Lightning devices might work?

I also tried Key Largo and Lightning iPad with a USB splitter cable, sending one USB-A to various power adapters, the other USB-A to Lightning iPad through Apple adapter with charging option, and USB-B to Key Largo. Midi is working but no audio. Occasionally a message pops up on iPad saying something like "There's not enough power available to support Radial Key Largo."
