NewImprov Posted August 20 Posted August 20 I definitely prefer the Stanton/Dua Lipa take over the Molina/Prince, Stanton, while he plays some killer stuff, always seems to be trying to serve the tune, and does some really subtle harmonic stuff. I hadn't heard the Dua Lipa track beforehand. To be fair to Molina, the synth riff is the main hook of 1999, so he didn't really have a lot to work with, but the stuff he did, impressive as it was, and I sure as hell can't play it, felt just like muscle memory for him, the kind of stuff that he knows always works. Here is a slightly different angle of the same video concept for musicians to show off chops and creativity. I didn't go looking and don't follow these musicians, but just an algorithmic feed… I enjoyed that video (Kurt Coltrane?) - to the point where I've got a Miles modal-style Heart-Shaped Box going round my head at the moment. Well put. I would really benefit from shutting myself in a room for a week and trying to cop the various chops and progressions he puts on display in this video. But that acknowledgment of his brilliance is totally different than saying he did something interesting with the tune. Which he didn't. If I recall, Stanton was given some time to work stuff out for the Lipa tune, and he did that. By contrast, Molina is like "nope, I'm ready to go, mayne." Both phenomenal players, but apples and oranges in their approach. Quote Gigging: Crumar Mojo 61, Hammond SKPro Home: Vintage Vibe 64
Bill H. Posted August 21 Posted August 21 I also liked the Stanton video a lot. It seemed like he was trying to play detective and sleuth out the original arrangement as well as add his own touch to things. Call me a pop music whore - I am familiar with the original (Don't Start Now) Guess I'm still curious about what the masses are listening to these days. Like the people on the couch, I was going "Whoa!" whenever he'd throw a curve ball into the arrangement. 1 Quote
