AlChuck
I know this is really a music-related forum but I knowe there's a lot of folks here that work with video too, and Craig uses Vegas Video, so I figured I'd give it a shot. Here's my problem: two of my projects have suddenly become unopenable (is that a word?) in Vegas Video 2.0h. I get this message an instant after choosing the files in question: An error occured while loading the project file filename.veg The COM object failed to initialize. The only difference between the day before, when they opened fine, and the next day, when they do not, is I did some cleanup and moved some stuff I'd finished with off to a CD. It's possible I had an audio file that I might have accidentally deleted. But I would expect that to cause SF to tell me a file was not found and then open anyway with a "hole" where the missing piece had been. I looked through the Sonic Foundry website's Knowledge Base and found an article about a problem involving Video Capture that exhibited the same error message. Though it sounded like a different situation, just in case, I tried uninstalling and reinstalling Video Capture as described in that article, but it had no effect. And in the Sonic Foundry support forums, someone else had posted a similar-sounding problem, thought the error message was different. Someone had suggested trying to open the back-up file. I tried that, but that gives me the same error message. I have sent this off to SF's Tech Support but I thought it was worth posting here in case someone else has encountered this problem. Thanks! deanmass
Long shot here, but no harm in this attempt....Sounds like the file header might be toast. Nortons' Disk Doctor may be able to rebuild it if that is the case. I don't use VEGAS, but I have seen similar symptoms, and this has repaired the file, assuming the error is detected. Copy the files to a separate location first and do a backup (as always)... This comes bundled into Norton Utilities, and when you put the CD in, there is an option to RUN FROM CD, rather than install. That is the way I would do it. Nortons can be kind of a resource hog if 'installed'. It will prompt you to auto-repair. Good luck...
AlChuck
Norton Disk Doctor... I don't have that. I'll look into it.
AlChuck
deanmass, I bought Norton Utilities and ran the Disk Doctor... did the thorough surface scan (which took hours), but no problems were found. Still not a peep back from Sonic Foundry Tech Support, not even an acknowledgement... grrrr...

I don't have Vegas Video and I am not totally familiar with it's project filling structure, but since xxx.veg is just a Veagas project file...it most likely contains pointer information to all the other files/components needed for that project. You might assume that any missing portions of that project would come up as a "hole"...but don't. It could very well be that during your "cleaning and moving of stuff" you DID take something that belongs to the particular project and now Vegas is lost and confused. I would try putting back everything as it was...unless of course you completely deleted a needed file/component of that particular project, in which case you just might have to build the project from scratch. miroslav - miroslavmusic.com "Just because it happened to you, it doesn't mean it's important." AlChuck
What I'm hoping is that there if this is indeed the case (that is, it won't open at all if a piece is missing), there is still some way to read the file's information to find out the path of the missing piece. Then I could probably find it and restore it. Otherwise I am hosed because if I had something in there from an odd place, I have no memory of what it might have been. I nearly always consolidate all my pieces for a Vegas project into the same directory...
AlChuck
Hallelujah, I fixed it... Having still heard not a peep from Sonic Foundry Tech Support, I decided to give the ol' uninstall and reinstall a try. In doing so I discovered that the uninstaller has a Remove mode and a Repair mode. SO I clicked on Repair, it quickly did its thing, and I reopened Vegas, and voila! My project can now be opened!
