jazzpiano88
Not sure if this has been posted. This came over my wire via Section Manager: Lelia R Garner, WA0UIG wa0uig@arrl.org I regret to inform you that our friend, Bob Heil, K9EID passed away Thursday, Feb 28, 2024 at the age of 83. He presented at the Midwest Convention in 2020 and via Zoom at my local club in the past few years also. Dynamic, interesting, and generous, Bob Heil lived his passion. 73, Bob, from all of us, dit dit From the Heil facebook site: Our beloved founder, Dr. Bob Heil, K9EID, is now a Silent Key. Bob fought a valiant, year-long battle with cancer, and passed peacefully surrounded by his family. Bob’s lifelong passion for amateur radio was clear to everyone involved in the hobby. Everything Bob did for the betterment and growth of amateur radio - from his instructional handbooks and countless presentations to his support of the ARRL and youth programs - was based on the foundation and spirit of service. Bob was an Elmer to all of us. While Bob’s presence will dearly be missed, his impact on the hobby and everyone in it will forever be felt. On behalf of Bob to all ham radio operators worldwide, 73. KuruPrionz
Rest In Peace, Bob Heil. I now remember that decades ago I bought a Heil Talk Box for my guitar. There was nothing else commercially manufactured that was like it. Now I wish I'd kept it. I think I could make one but I probably won't. 1 Quote It took a chunk of my life to get here and I am still not sure where "here" is.

jazzpiano88
This is an utterly fascinating interview reminiscing about his radio years. He was a young teenager and managed to get a group of adult hams to help him install a 110' Rohn tower at his house!!!!!! HF + 6m !!! That his parents were accommodating is just an understatement!!! And then they put up a 50' tower for VHF and 15m. I remember his microphones, but I was a broke teenager ham in '78 and found a great deal on a D104 that broke through DX pileups reliably. My Dad helped (did it) for me put up a monoband 5 element 15m beam on the house but it was on about a 4' tripod with low enough wind loading to use a radio shack rotator that I could afford. I never used it in high winds . During winter storms the antenna would resonate the entire house with vibrations. My god what great memories! Greg Mein
I remember I once built one using my little battery powered micro Marshall amp, you know the ones. Certainly simple enough; drilled a couple holes in the back of it, one for a little DPDT switch and the other for a 1/4" jack so I could run the speaker output to an external driver with a plastic hose attached. I can't remember where I got the idea but it worked great. It was fun for a while but I eventually removed the mods. A few years ago I bought a Rocktron Banshee 2. I just now dug it out of the closet, it may have been out of the box once but I've still got good intentions of using it on a track someday! RIP Bob!
