Stop the 1st team with possession from scoring a TD. Then, score by any means (TD or FG) and win the game. Seems fair enough.😎 I know this rule. That's what I think is not fair. Both teams work hard and end regular play in a tie. Just because the team that wins the coin toss and receives the ball in OT scores a TD, the opposing team does not get a chance to show that they are just as good. It's unfair. It means the outcome of the game is effectively decided by who wins the coin toss. The better team did not win because the opposing team did not have an opportunity to show that they were just as good. The winning team won the coin toss and that's all they won. You didn't outscore your opponent if your opponent didn't get an equal chance to play. Quote These are only my opinions, not supported by any actual knowledge, experience, or expertise. El Lobo
New baseball rule: score is tied after 9 innings. 10th inning: 1st team that scores a run wins the game. Top of inning team is decided by coin toss. Mudville wins the toss and of course elects to bat first. Mudville scores a run and wins the game. The other team never gets to bat. 1 Quote These are only my opinions, not supported by any actual knowledge, experience, or expertise.
GovernorSilver
The new kickoff rules make me 🤣 as well. NFL OT used be sudden death, with the team winning the coin toss being able to win by just a FG. The change to allow BOTH teams at least one possession is an improvement vs. the old way imo. Should there be no more changes to OT rules? I'm not sure about that one. College OT rules make it too easy to go into triple OT imo. Other random thoughts: - Jayden Daniels did alright for a rookie facing a defense playing at NFL speed for the first time. So, not a deadly passer out of the gate but also did not make silly mistakes, made some plays with his legs, and took care of himself when tackled. But the Bucs were just too much of a mismatch - multiple time NFC South winner vs. rebuilding team - Saints takedown of Panthers just too easy - Cousins just too rusty to lead the Falcons to a win over the visiting Steelers, whose conservative, defense-led approach proved successful. - Burrow, also coming off serious injury, also had too much rust to knock off against the visiting Patriots. - Colts-Texans was a fun watch - ok the highlight video anyway. Stroud-Richardson should be a fun divisional rivalry to watch for years to come, assuming both stay healthy. All 4 teams in that division have a high profile young QB.

ProfD
Picking up where he left off last year, IMO, 49ers HC/OC Kyle Shanahan remains the best play-caller in the NFL. The 49ers rushing attack was on point led by undrafted RB Jordan Mason. The offense fired on all cylinders. Defense played great as well. The Jets look better than last with QB Aaron Rodgers under center. He has weapons on the field if they can figure out to catch and/or hold on to the ball. The game outcome was as I expected with a Super Bowl team versus a rebuild in progress team.😎 Quote PD "The greatest thing you'll ever learn, is just to love and be loved in return."--E. That's a pretty good point, though in that case it's basically one pitcher giving up that run while in NFL OT it's a whole defense....and as someone said, defense is half the game. I wouldn't mind a college-style OT but let each team start once from their own 20. If anyone is winning after that one possession each, it's over. If tied--whether neither scored, or both scored a touchdown or whatever--it's sudden death. That gives both offences and both defenses a chance to decide the game and it shouldn't add much extra time (like having a million college OTs would, seriously I've seen as many as seven though that was before they forced a 2-pointer after the first one or two.) Also it would allow a team to win by going on (or stopping) at least one long drive. I fully expect a royalty from the NFL when they implement the new Stokely Overtime rule.

GovernorSilver
Chargers took care of business in Carolina, rolling up 200 rushing yards, with JK Dobbins contributing about 130 of them, despite splitting carries evenly with Gus Edwards. I don't anticipate the next opponent - Steelers - rolling over as easily for this ground-hugging Charger offense. Surprising upset of the Ravens by the Raiders. Losing 3 starting OL this past offseason to free agency really hurt that Ravens offense.
ProfD
The Commanders won by kicking 7 FGs. False start penalties in the red zone killed several TD opportunities. Also, I was expecting the Commamders new defensive-minded HC and his staff to bring a better and more aggressive defense. Even with a crop of new players, the Commanders defense looks about the same or slightly worse than last year. Thankfully, my expectations for this season are reasonable enough to account for the rebuilding, er, growing pains of new ownership, coaching staff and players too.😎 Quote PD "The greatest thing you'll ever learn, is just to love and be loved in return."--E. Geoff Grace
Congrats on the Steelers win against the Broncos, Mike. Denver has some work to do… At least the Loveless Packers took care of business against the Colts, but the Rams got destroyed by the Cardinals. Maybe we’d better start paying attention to Arizona again. And how about Minnesota’s upset of San Francisco? The NFC North looks good (although not necessarily great) from top to bottom this year. GovernorSilver
It was fun to see what the Jets offense looks like with a healthy and mobile Aaron Rodgers. Just too much for what looks like a rebuilding Patriots squad. Same thing with the Jets D. Made the Pats O look helpless. They look good now but it is indeed a long season. Oh and just saw the news that Mayo elected to keep Brissett as starter. I don't think Drake Maye will start until the Pats have been officially eliminated from the playoff race. No need to Bryce Young him.
Geoff Grace
Yes, time will tell just how good the Jets are. Regardless, Jets fans seem over the moon, just to have hope. In the meantime, whenever I see Rodgers pass to Lazard, I feel like I’m watching a Packers game. Green Bay has let go of so much talent over the years, and yet they still manage to field a strong team that’s usually in contention. MikeT156
The Chargers-Steelers game was brutal. A number of players on both sides were injured and backups for the Steelers stepped up. Our QB Played well, he did have an interception, but he also scored a TD. The Second half belonged to the Steelers. The Defense controlled the game and and substitute players played great. The Steelers could have scored another TD with enough time on the clock but Coach told them to take an knee and let the clock run out. I think that was the right thing to do. Some of the Steeler fans were not happy with that but it was a classy thing to do. The game was already won. Another reason why I love Coach Tomlin. Classy call by an NFL head coach I've respected for a while now - Mike Tomlin. It'll be an interesting call for Tomlin to make now between Justin Fields and Russell Wilson once Wilson is healthy and ready to go. A few weeks ago, Tomlin seemed to be set on Wilson as his guy. But his team is undefeated so far with Fields. I'm still happy with the job Jim Harbaugh and his GM Ortiz have done in rehabilitating this Chargers roster. You only get so many draft picks every year to bring in young talent, and you only get so much salary cap space to get free agents. They did what they could for 2024 but the Steelers superior depth showed the Chargers still have a ways to go. Losing both offensive tackles was a tough break for Herbert and his backup Heinecke. Harbaugh will figure out whatever bandaid for the OL he'll need for the Chiefs game in case he'll be missing 1 or 2 starting tackles - most likely some reshuflling - then have the bye week after that to lick their wounds.

Geoff Grace
I hope the Packers remembered to thank the Titans again for Malik Willis after today’s game. He’s clearly doing a great job for someone who was thrust into the system at the last minute. Great comeback by the decimated Rams today against the depleted 49ers. Los Angeles really needed this win. I was surprised by the Broncos’ victory too, but less surprised at the Vikings’ win. Minnesota is a strong team, and Darnold finally got great quarterback training in the 49ers’ system last year. I expect the Vikings to be contenders this year. GovernorSilver
Another veteran QB who kind of had the bust tag put on him also logged a high level performance - Andy Dalton. After all, they already had a backup quarterback who, despite their coaching, wasn’t up to the job; so they spent a 7th round pick to acquire Willis, who I’m sure they thought looked promising. Then, like you said, they must have done something right to help him play better than before. The Packers made a believer out of me that they know what they’re doing when it comes to quarterbacks. I remember I was shocked when Favre decided to unretire, and they told him, “Sorry, we’ve moved on.” I could understand why they were tired of the retirement drama, but Favre was their first Hall of Fame quarterback since Bart Starr, and they were ready to move on? Really? And at first, it looked like they had made a mistake. They went from 13-3 under Favre to a losing season under Rodgers; and the next season, Favre took the Vikings to the NFC Championship Game. But then, Rodgers led Green Bay to a Super Bowl win and had an elite level of play without all of the interceptions that Favre threw. It turned out that they knew what they were doing after all. Fast forward to the drafting of Jordan Love that upset both pundits and fans, and I wasn’t upset at all. This was the formula that worked with Rodgers, learning what to do (and what not to do) while sitting behind a great player. Why not try it again? Sure enough, it seems to have worked. If Love does wind up in the Hall of Fame, it will be an unprecedented three quarterbacks in a row, something no other franchise has ever achieved. If so, credit is due not just to the quarterbacks but to the Packers organization as well.
