max Posted January 19, 2002 Posted January 19, 2002 i will gladly second (third) aimee mann (who, incidentally, was screwed by no less than three labels, before she bought out her masters and went solo (perhaps, britney enjoys being speared)), elliott smith and squeeze, but my favourite band of all time was totally unappreciated here in oz (despite doing well in new york and barcelona among others), and their name was:.. jackson code (check them out if you can) cheers max newcastle, oz
chessparov Posted January 19, 2002 Posted January 19, 2002 "Hearts of Stone" by Southside Johnny and the Ashbury Jukes! P.S. Even though it's famous with musicians/critics, Van Morrison's masterpiece "Astral Weeks" took s long time to go "gold" with the public.
coolhouse Posted January 19, 2002 Posted January 19, 2002 Almost any Americana(alt-country,no depression)album is sure to be a commercial disappointment. Here's a few good ones: Little Love Affairs......Nanci Griffith Beneath My Wheels........Kevin Welch Wrecking Ball............Emmylou Harris Awaiting Redemption......Hal Ketchum & some not quite so country: Outward Bound............Sonny Landreth Primitive Streak.........The Subdudes Living Under June........Jann Arden Chinese Work Songs.......Little Feat Contact From The Underground of Redboy....Robbie Robertson later, Mike [ 01-19-2002: Message edited by: coolhouse ]
Synthguy Posted January 19, 2002 Posted January 19, 2002 I'm surprised with the bands being posted that no one mentioned The Residents. ;) For a quirky inclusion, anyone heard of Mr. Bungle? California was a weird rollercoaster. Brian Eno was almost ignored. Lots of people just thot he was a producer. The same for Rupert Hine. The Borrowers had a great first album, self titled. I have to concur with Kings-X, fantastic writing and sound. Who knows who Devin Townsend is? ;) Adrian Belew has to be the greatest guitar player no one's ever heard of outside of King Crimson circles. I bet no one's ever heard of Duncan Browne. An amazing blend of Americana with a Euro texture, a cross I suppose between Chris Isaak, Dire Straits, Phil Manzanera and... someone else. :D Tony Hymas did some excellent keyboard work, and Duncan is a sweet guitarist. Very soulful and melodic, terrific writer. Tony Banks wrote a brilliant if depressing album at the end of '79, A Curious Feeling. Absolutely gorgeous, played almost everything but drums. Steve Hackett's second album Please Don't Touch was also a monster. UK did a live album in '79, and it sounds huge for a three piece group. Eddie Jobson, Wetton and Bozio never sounded so good. Also the most audiophile quality live recording I've ever heard. Terry Bozio's drums sound like they're in the living room. [ 01-19-2002: Message edited by: synthguy ] This keyboard solo has obviously been tampered with!
Gtoledo3 Posted January 19, 2002 Posted January 19, 2002 XTC-Oranges and Lemons BeachBoys-PetSounds (viewed as a hit now, but at the time, it pushed the BB's into obscurity) Blues Image - selftitled, and Open. This was latin rock/zeppelin/kravitz way before anybody. Not in release DC Talk -Intermission. I die hard newborn christian gave this to me. Didnt like it at first, but these guys are really one of the best recorded bands ever, and the songs, arrangements and vocals are amazing. It's so sad that they will allways be discriminated against. Iron Butterfly- Metamorphosis. You owe it to your self to get this, almost entirely different from the Inna Gadda Da Vida version of the band. A classic rock masterpiece w/ the first ever recorded talk box solo(Butterfly Blue). It is like a hard rock Righteous Brothers! Want mix/tracking feedback? Paul Alexander Posted January 20, 2002 Posted January 20, 2002 Two wonderful albums you may listen to if you haven't are:

Goodbye Yellow Brick Road - Elton John
Blue Views - Paul Carrack
Cheers, Paul Alexander ChartHitter Music

I'm glad you aint my accountant ;) ! /Mats [ 01-19-2002: Message edited by: mats.olsson@rockfile.se ] http://www.lexam.net/peter/carnut/man.gif What do we want? Procrastination! When do we want it? Dak Lander Posted January 21, 2002 Posted January 21, 2002 Joe Ely, Jimmy Rabbit & Renegade, Richard Thompson, Hoyt Axton, Todd Snider and Little Feat. Of course, my band, Dakota Night! I never done that before... Our Joint "When you come slam bang up against trouble, it never looks half as bad if you face up to it." The Duke...
Skip_dup1 Posted January 21, 2002 Posted January 21, 2002 Ya, I got a few: Journey-the first three albums before they added that %##1&&! singer and screwed it all up. Neal Schon, Greg Rolie and Aynsley Dunbar-totally rocked Suzanne Vega-just about anything after `solitude standing` The October Project-gorgeous writing, singing and production. Two albums and then they vanished. The Rembrandts-what the heck happened to them anyway? Mr. Mister-maybe too Christian for some but I thought they were great-third album tanked unless you saw the film with title song-`stand and deliver` Jan Akkerman-anything post-Focus
SFOracle Posted January 22, 2002 Posted January 22, 2002 A couple of Canadian bands that never really cracked the US market, but are huge in Canada. The Tragically Hip - several albums, but Fully Completely is my fav. Blue Rodeo - Casino is probably my favorite. Saga - Heads or Tails - okay they are not Canadian (German I believe) but this was a great album. Britney Spears - Baby One More Time - god she rocks, I just don't understand why she is not popular. Steve LeBlanc Posted January 22, 2002 Posted January 22, 2002
RE: Aimee Mann- I think she has no label out of choice, and likes it
Yep, but to be fair I would never have heard of her had she not been signed to a major label. hmmm... ;) Chris Cornell's solo album is really cool but the drum sound is so sterile it really pissed me off...I hardly ever listen to it because of that. http://www.youtube.com/notesleb
Alan Dalton Posted January 22, 2002 Posted January 22, 2002 There's a song called "Unconditional Love" on Tupac's Greatest Hits album; not many people know it but it's my favourite song of all time. It's mostly Tupac rapping and a very laid-back and groovy bassline.
tenton Posted January 22, 2002 Posted January 22, 2002 Some good items in this list. I'd also add most of the stuff from American Music Club. Some really great songwriting, arrangements and production. Sad how talent doesn't always rise to the top.

philbo_Tangent Posted January 22, 2002 Posted January 22, 2002 There certainly are some excellent ones posted. BTW, for you Kings-X fans, Ty Tabor made a great solo record called 'Naomi's Solar Pumpkin' (or something like that - I can't seem to find it right now to check). Wind Him Up & On The Loose. Of these two, On The Loose received LOTS of airplay in the Chicago area when it was current, and Wind Him Up I wouldn't have discovered, if not for a display, sampler CD Radio Shack used to have for demoing their CD players. This goes back a LONG way. They barely had begun selling CD players when this CD was in their stores. (It also had Couldn't Stand The Weather by SRV, among others.) The rest of the album seemed pretty lame, IMO. Kinda sterile sounding. It's easiest to find me on Facebook. Neil Bergman Soundclick fntstcsnd
Gulliver Posted January 22, 2002 Posted January 22, 2002
Originally posted by fantasticsound: I can only agree with two songs off this album. Wind Him Up & On The Loose...
These both songs are on "Worlds Apart" (1981, Saga's best album IMHO) not on their "Heads Or Tails" (1983). Just my 2 cents :) . I am back.
Gulliver Posted January 22, 2002 Posted January 22, 2002 Oh, and I would second for Happy The Man - "Crafty Hands". Simply the best (almost)instrumental album of all time! Being re-mastered by maestro Kit Watkins himself it sounds like it's recorded yesterday - excellent sound quality to boot. I am back.
henryrobinett Posted January 23, 2002 Posted January 23, 2002 Fantasticsound I have to agree with you about Toy Matinee. Love this CD. One of my faorite under appreciated CDs. I really liked Kevin Gilbert. "Thud" wasn't what I had hoped for, but I heard some of "Shaming of the True" - great. Anyone know if it was ever released? All the best, Henry Robinett
PretentiousName Posted January 23, 2002 Posted January 23, 2002
Shiner -- everything, really, but I like Lula Divinia and The Egg -- the pinnacle of alternarock
I can't believe someone mentioned these guys. The Egg is positively a work of art. Decent live to, or at least when I saw them with Burning Airlines. one album I'm into that hasn't been listed yet is Local H's Pack Up the Cats, one of the many albums that went nowhere due to the huge industry merger of the late 90s.
