Kris
The best time to go is during Jazz Fest... Kris My Band: http://www.fullblackout.com UPDATED!!! Fairly regularly these days... http://www.logcabinmusic.com updated 11/9/
Mark Zeger
Originally posted by profesrgeo@earthlink.net: Ain't never been there. Whats cool?
The food and the music. Just avoid Emeril's overrated establishments (he hasn't seen the working side of a restaurant kitchen in more than 5 years). There's a music group of brothers from the Neville family...I hear they're pretty good. www.citysearch.com is a reliable site for tourism info. Gabriel E.
Ok here's the deal: Eat. Avoid Emeril's or K-Paul's (Paul Prudhomme's restaurant). Both of these are tourist traps that are WAY past their prime. Bayona on Dauphine St. is fantastic if you want to go somewhere expensive. So are Commander's Palace, Gamay and Galatoir's. If you want to spend a little less, Napoleon House on Chartres St. has great lunches and a great atmosphere. The Praline Connection and Dooky Chase both have great Creole food. The Royal St. Grocery has awesome po-boys and gumbo. Don't eat anywhere on Bourbon St. Listen to music. If you want to hear old time jazz, go to Preservation Hall to hear real old timers play it. This is black jazz, not white dixieland. Get there EARLY as there is little room and the lines can be long. Snug Harbor has good modern jazz and Ellis Marsalis appears regularly. The Maple Leaf Bar has brass bands, blues, funk and zydeco. Donna's has just brass bands (these are new school brass bands and they sound great). Cafe Brasil has latin, funk and reggae. El Matador and Checkpoint Charlie's have local rock bands. Tipitina's and the Howlin Wolf both have bigger acts. If you want to go bowling and listen to live zydeco, swing and blues, check out Mid City Lanes bowling alley on N. Carrolton Ave. LOTS of fun! While I recommend walking down Bourbon St. once, don't bother going into any of the clubs or restaurants. These are strictly tourist-oriented and locals NEVER go there (except for the gay clubs). strat0124
Or drive across the bridge to Covington and on to Loranger via Unitas.......my old stomping grounds. Bill of Dash Rip Rock is from Ponchatoula. I like the areas outside Nawlins better, but its fun to hang out there once in a while. Good food fo sho....I'm hungry me. Down like a dollar comin up against a yen, doin pretty good for the shape I'm in

Chipotle
For food, there's a place on Barrone called Euchlysh's (I'm not sure of the spelling) which is really good. I like the Gumbo Shop. Commander's Palace, I thought, was pretty overrated, although I'm spoiled living in San Francisco. Acme is still good for oysters and the basics. Go to Mother's for a poor boy. As far as music, Snug Harbor is good. I saw a good show at the Funky Butt (Jason Marsalis) and there's another place down the street from Funky Butt that was pretty good too, although I can't remember the name. There's a record shop in the quarter that has a lot of jazz vinyl, if you're into that.
Mats Olsson.
Ride a streetcar to the garden district, beatiful place for a nice walk. Go to the Zoo, used to very fine (I was there in '89) Maple Leaf Bar! You MUST go there if you like hot music! (Zydeco/Swamp rock/Cajun etc...) /Mats http://www.lexam.net/peter/carnut/man.gif What do we want? Procrastination! When do we want it? Later!
