LED strip for Apex stand : problem with remote

I added a strip of LEDs to my Apex stand. Mounted the remote to my keyboard. Everything worked great at home. My intent was to be able to change the color when I want and make them flash during solos. However, when I got to the show, I couldn't get the remote to work reliably. I thought it was maybe a line-of-sight thing with the remote, but even up close pointed right at it I had issues. I tried it again this morning at home and everything worked great.

 

Anybody run into something like this? Maybe the stage lights are affecting things? But I also had the issue backstage during setup. Am I asking too much from this little $12 purchase? Wondering if I could get something similar but with a wired remote.

With all those led’s used as stage lighting, it’s most likely messing with the ir signal from the remote 

 

Most wired solutions for rgb strips will usually involve very basic dmx controls

Great idea btw.

 

Does your LED strip have a smartphone app for control via Bluetooth? That might be an alternative.

Looking at this wired option. Still dirt cheap. Any recommendations beyond this if I were to dip my toes in DMX waters?
