One of the advantages of fixing the Kurzweils PC3's audio as I consider possible, is such that with certain digital uses, the sound coming out of the DAC is less broken, at least, is that the result works on a Lexicon effect.

So I use the new Linux computer to record a surround sound based on the digital output, using a Lexicon Omega to get the front and rear outputs of the Lexicon MX400.

Trying it out with two sounds, a bass (subtle) and piano (ROM 4 of the PC3, but with all the AUX2 effects very specific to work with the master eq and muco for improving the sound), this is the result:

http://www.theover.org/Keybdmg/surround3.flac lossless 24 bit 4 channel flac (not a standard but Firefox plays it in surround)

http://www.theover.org/Keybdmg/surround3.mp4 same but little louder, and shorter pause at the beginning, and not lossless, 48000 Hz, 4 ch, floatle, 384.0 kbit/s AC-3 in mp4 container without video

The recording of the surround reverb took small timing corrections which aren't perfect, so that introduces small errors, but it still sounds nice in surround.

That's cool if it's a solo keyboard piece or synth soundscape. If it's a keyboard mixed with a band like bass and drums then the bigger the keys sound, the smaller everything else is.

And if you include everybody in your 5.1 surround, well let's just say that mixing in 2 or 2.1 is hard enough. Mixing in 5.1 is insanely hard.

And unless every playback system is exactly like yours with identical positioning, your mix could end up completely screwy.

Surround has been around for decades but most don't mess with it.

I realize you're talking about a 4 channel mix. I believe the same things apply to other multi channel formats

Oh boy, now it gets really fun!!

we’re responsible for all things audible in all media so yes 5.1.

i’ve had a few synths die because of the inboard cheapo displays so how about HDMI OUT with 5.1 and digital video out?(imagine the possible menu displays) And while you’re at it can I have some GPI TRIGGERING?

The creation of the rear sound elements from stereo V.A.S.T. input is fun, because the sound starts to get good. This Kurz has 4 analog outputs, so in principle it could also create a surround sound basis with 4 channels through an analog mixer, which the surround reverb can take in as front + rear in, and it will create a surround reverb from that, like I use for beefing up my FDR AX43 Sony surround recording cam's 5.1 ac-3 files, or simply for getting that surround sound Prime Video to cinema experience.

The interesting bit is the more correct mix makes the sound field generated by the unit a lot better, and a pleasure to listen to.

I know my experience is not quite what you're talking about here but,

I've often mentioned surround setups with my rigs in various places. It's usually been responded with deathly silence. For the gigging musician it's not a thing. But for me as a studio only dude, it's bread a butter. I spend a lot of time playing and absorbing myself in my sound fields. All my DAW setup templates are all about surround!

I usually have things set up with the instrument sound field spread across the front and process it via tailored reverb for the rear. I don't tend to place instruments around 360 though. A flat lifeless 2 dimension stereo field just doesn't cut it for me anymore :)

I've long been playing around with creating a surround setup with digital piano/controller against a wall, with the gear all mounted with the keyboard. (which is more in line with your example?), I know the techniques are pretty common, but with lots of tweaking, speaker placement and reverb timing/parameters, I now have an immersive sound field using 4 Genelec monitors mounted in the same plane against a wall. It's got to be heard to be believed. To hear it is the only way :)

Unfortunately I've only been able to achieve this by configuring it through my DAW. I also use the 4 outputs of my Montage8 in the studio, but I've never found and easy way to send the onboard sounds in surround as standalone. Same problem I tried with my Kronos. So I have to send it as external through the DAW and back out the audio outputs.

I've asked on forums if anyone knows how to set up surround on the Montage or Kronos internally, I'd appreciate advice :)
