Idol culture in Japan is a whole other thing compare to the pop star culture in the USA.

Hatsune Miku is the grandmama of today's Japanese Vtuber stars.  One evolution with the Vtubers is a greater variety of voices. Not all of them go for the same cutesy vibe anymore.  Some have deeper voices.

To be fair to the Japanese, they still love to see fully live musos playing live music too.

By "they" I mean some percentage of the population.  Not sure how much intersection there is between the virtual idol loving crowd and the live musos only crowd - I don't think it's a clean separation.

I saw the band Boris play a great show a few weeks ago - on tour of course.

On related note...

In Japan there was an act called  Houkago Tea Time that beat out Gorillaz for top album sales by a virtual band.   Houkago Tea Time first existed only in manga (Japanese comic books), then in anime (Japanese cartoons).    Here they are in the anime performing one of their hit tunes "Fluffy Time"

The franchise proved to be so popular that the producers decided to stage a live concert, with the girls' voice actresses playing their characters' instruments.   Only one of the actresses had previous musical training - the one who played the keyboard player.  The rest were taught how to play and put through hours of practice sessions.

When they played the live concert, they were backed by a professional pit band and only had to pretend to play, most of the time.  However, the purpose of their practice sessions was to prepare them to play their instruments for real for a few songs.  "Fluffy Time" was one of those songs.    I think most of you will hear right away it's really them playing and not the pit band - I don't think I need to spell out the various giveaways.  The keyboardist had to play the solo since neither guitarist had more than a couple of weeks lifetime experience.  That said I find their performance quite endearing.

One thing that blew my mind was the cartoon bassist's actress learned how to play bass left handed, even though she's actually right handed, just because her character was a lefty.

I believe Hatsune Miku is voiced by Yamaha's Vocaloid program.

Also, that clip is over 10 years old - I'm guessing they have a better version of her now.

I believe all the other performers in the stage are Real People.

Yes I did see the OP's statement the instrumental performers are live humans.

I had mixed feelings when this first appeared because it seemed like too much of a novelty. Now, you can buy tools that will allow you to convincingly sing like a soprano, so very realistic 'fake' choirs are a snap. It leaves vocoders in the dust, unless you need that specific realm. God loves exotic pitch-shifters. :like:

As a singer who has practiced his craft for decades, I prefer to sing without any fx other than eq, delay and/or reverb.

I can sing on pitch if I want to (most of the time <grin>) and I play with the pitch, sometimes singing a bit sharp or flat, sometimes attacking or releasing a not off pitch or whatever my impulse is when I'm singing.

I also like to control my own dynamics, tone, and I use the distance and/or angle to the mic to my advantage.

All that suits the kind of expression I wish to convey. It's done in real-time, and without much word based thought.

I did find the computer voice and animation and the music was surprisingly good, even if it wasn't my personal form of expression.

There is more than one right way to make music.
