DaveMcM Posted September 28, 2022 Posted September 28, 2022 When I lived in Philadelphia, PA working for Ensoniq, I would frequent a jazz club named The Balligomingo Inn. The house band included Joey's dad, Poppa John DeFrancesco. I have been looking for info about the place for a long time and finally came across the linked article. Hope it triggers good memories for others. 1 Quote Wm. David McMahan I Play, Therefore I Am
re Pete Posted September 28, 2022 Posted September 28, 2022 Went there a few times on a Monday night I think. A little trouble finding it. Remember a lot of smokers. Thought it was a little run down at the time. But it was a good organ room. Sorry it closed. Quote
Docbop Posted September 28, 2022 Posted September 28, 2022 The two old Jazz clubs that I miss. Donte's wasn't too far from the Jazz school I worked at so many nights after I closed the school up I head over to Dontes. This is where I had my first experience of real drop dead serious NYC Jazz seeing Woody Shaw. The Lighthouse is technically still there but it's nothling like in it was back in the day when even they called themselves a Jazz Dive. This is where a young dumb Rock and Roller had my come to Jesus moment and became a Jazz fan for life. A buddy talked me and some friends to go see Jimmy Smith trio with Phil Upchurch on guitar. I saw Dexter Gordon and many others here over the years, before it was remodel into a hipster hangout. 1 Quote
