I found out right before my new jazz combo went on stage to play our debut set today.

Pharoah was a huge influence on me, from the moment I first heard him at age 12 (maybe earlier).

As my new sax player has another band that played before us today, who are heavily Sun Ra influenced, it especially hit home.

Eugenio Upright, 60th Anniversary P-Bass, USA Geddy Lee J-Bass, Yamaha BBP35, D'angelico SS Bari, EXL1,

Select Strat, 70th Anniversary Esquire, LP 57, Eastman T486, T64, Ibanez PM2, Hammond XK4, Moog Voyager

Rest In Peace Pharoah, thanks for the music.

My brother brought John Coltrane and Pharaoh Sanders Live in Seattle home when I was 15. As soon as he discovered that it drove Mom insane, we started listening to it obsessively.

I won't pretend that I understood it, I probably don't understand it now either. Doesn't matter, it was so different from anything I'd listened to and clearly genius level madness.

It changed the way I thought about music.

It took a chunk of my life to get here and I am still not sure where "here" is.

The church I worked at the Choir Director and one of the band musicians both played piano for Pharaoh at one point and  were always so proud of that.     Thank you Pharaoh for all you shared with us RIP.

That said if you changed the way you though about music, you did understand it!

I understood that there were musics out there that I might not be able to parse or play but I could enjoy them.

That is a way of opening the mind to open up the world and I will always say that my brother (who really can't play worth a hoot) is probably my biggest musical influence.

Just kids in Central California, I thought Cream was pretty cool and suddenly there is Miles, Monk, Mingus, Coltrane and Rasaan Roland Kirk. Also Turkish Village Music, story telling African music accompanied by vocals and home made mbira, chants by Tibetan Monks and all sorts of interesting new (to me) things.

These endless sounds and possibilities that Pharoah Sanders embraced throughout his musical life!

In 2019, he recorded with Joey DeFrancesco, record was titled "In The Key Of The Universe".

Hope they are now both recording at that great big recording studio in the sky.

RIP
