OT- DVD crapped out....or did it?

Recommended Posts

Had my DVD player go down this past weekend. Tried different movies and nothing would load "No Disc" was the message.

I remembered that this player plays CD's and CDR's etc, soI tried a few, and they all worked, went aback to DVD's and nothing...

Does this mean the end of the unit, as repairs would cost as much as replacing the unit? Or, is this something a lens cleaner could possibly help? Do those even work? I could keep the unit as just a CD player w/ digital out I guess. What do you think?

thanx for the help!

hit it real hard (not too hard) on the top.

seriously.

I have a Sony DVD player and it was doing the same thing anout a year ago. I couldn't get any of my DVDs to play on it so I lost my temper and smacked the thing on the top and all of the sudden, the damn thing started to work

It's been working ever since.

Brought to you by the "spit in the back and bang on it three times" school of electronic repair. ;)

Try running a cleaner CD in it and see if that helps.

Lens cleaners usually do more harm than good. And in your case it would only clean the cd lenses and not the dvd lens, unless it was a dvd lens cleaner. In either case I don't recommend it. We usually clean those lens with a cotton swab and a quality lens cleaning fluid. There are other chemicals that work but they won't leave behind the proctective coating. Sometimes, as stated, the lens change-over system is just stuck, and a slight smack won't hurt. That's light smack, like you love it. Hmmm, I mean take it easy. Most replacement lens (laser) cost anywhere from $59.00 to $275.00 dollars. A new Wal-Mart special is $39.00 Kcbass

Thanks much guys! Gonna go home and smack her around a lil tonight. ;)

I'll try the DVD lens cleaner as well. I just never knew if those cleaners actually worked. It's a 4 year old unit, so a cleaning is in order.

My first thought is the drive motor. Electro-mechanical usually fails before the electronics. The motor can get gummed up and cause a no disk message. This happens to Playstation and other DVD/CD devices. We live in an age of disposable electronics with a definitive meantime to failure. Time's up.

It's an RCA unit, and it's still on the fritz..

Tried beating it down...no luck, took the lid off, and took a peek. The motor seems to work fine. When I loaded a disc, the red laser lifted up and only came on briefly then blinked off. The motor was still spinning, but the disc won't load.

Probably a fried laser, or something... It's now a secondary CD player(w/ lightpipe out) sitting unplugged in the studio closet.

Time to go DVD shopping again... Any recommendations for under a $75 bucks?

Just out of curiosity, what is the model? It sounds like a nice player, I bet it was expensive. The one I bought in 2000 was $300, and it was pretty much bare bones. No lightpipe for me.

Most players that old won't play anamorphic widescreen dvds, not sure if yours did. Also, error-correction software is far better now than it was four years ago. Even if you get a mid-priced ($75) player, you'll get far less skips & freezes when playing scratched discs.

Toshiba is good for mid priced dvd players.

Man, if you've got four years out of a dvd player then consider yourself lucky. Our first one, a phillips just spit a gear out of the load door one day and died. Our second one, a Panasonic did what yours is doing and nothing I tried would help (the Pana wouldn't even play cds though).

So we went to Sears and just got the cheapest one, a Koss for like $60.00. Also payed the extra six bucks for a 2 year service contract. It's been working great and looks as good as the other much more expensive units. Also does great with mp3s, pics, CDRW, etc.

Brakka, I really don't remember the actual model #. It's an all black unit I got from Radio Shack for around $149. That was a pretty good price for it at the time. It played DVD, VCD, CD, CDR, and yes the lightpipe out.

DC, I think I'll get 2 units. Maybe a cheapo combo DVD/HiFi VCR unit, and another standalone DVD with a lil better quality. Not quite ready for the recorders yet.

Thanks for all the input guys!!
