cedar Posted September 23, 2022 Posted September 23, 2022 Just heard this version of "Oleo" for the first time, and I want an explanation. Quote

Morrissey Posted September 23, 2022 Posted September 23, 2022 Reminds me of my confusion when I first heard John Scofield's version of Cissy Strut modulate down temporarily to Ab Quote
cedar Posted September 23, 2022 Author Posted September 23, 2022 16251, I think you nailed measures 3-4, not as sure about 5-6. I must say I think I felt more than confusion when I first heard this; it was almost outrage. How dare he do that to Oleo? 😁 Quote

I'm not near piano. Maybe someone can clarify. Quote AvantGrand N2 | ES520 | Gallien-Krueger MK & MP | https://soundcloud.com/pete36251

Fortunately, that lunatic Remi Bolduc gives us a ring-side seat so we can try to figure it all out for ourselves at home: Quote

He's like, playing guitar or something? Isn't the point of Jazz to be creative and improvise? He seems to be doing exactly that. If things must be "just so and no other way" then that isn't Jazz anymore. Quote It took a chunk of my life to get here and I am still not sure where "here" is.
Jim Alfredson Posted September 24, 2022 Posted September 24, 2022 That version by Grant is killer. I think he was inspired by Giant Steps, which was released only a year or so before his sessions with Sonny Clark. I like this version, too. Why not mess with it? It's just rhythm changes, so doing something different with the tune is fun (ie, jazz). 3 Quote Keep it greazy! B3tles - Soul Jazz THEO - Prog Rock
Jim Alfredson Posted September 24, 2022 Posted September 24, 2022 Regarding your chart, he's just doing a series of II V I. Cmaj7 | Dbm7 Gb7 | Bmaj7 | Cm7 F7 | Bb7 etc.... Quote Keep it greazy! B3tles - Soul Jazz THEO - Prog Rock
cedar Posted September 24, 2022 Author Posted September 24, 2022 To be serious, obviously it's great to experiment. I was just taken back by this particular group doing so on rhythm changes. Really caught me by surprise. Quote
cedar Posted September 24, 2022 Author Posted September 24, 2022 By the way, another thing that surprised me, frankly, is that I had never heard this version - or even this album before. I thought I had heard all of Sonny Clark's recorded performances. Quote
