Dave Bryce Posted September 18, 2022 Posted September 18, 2022 I saw Hiromi play in LA last night with the PUBLIQuartet, performing - among other things - her new Silver Linings Suite. I have never seen a show like that before in my life. 🤯😍 Seriously - I do everything I can to stay away from superlatives, but that may have been the single best piano performance I have ever seen, ever. Really…I sat there almost completely transfixed for two hours. My wife said my eyes were like saucers… ….and the music itself - OMG. Breathtaking, from the very first series of notes to the end of the encore. Perfect is not the right word - perfect means no mistakes. This was beyond that. The whole show was nothing short of magical and breathtaking from end to end. So much passion and energy. Such total command of an instrument….and above all, endless love and fun. The string quartet was equally jaw dropping. If this show comes anywhere near you, do whatever you need to do to see it. dB 6 Quote ==> David Bryce Music • Funky Young Monks <== Professional Affiliations: Royer Labs • Music Player Network
ElmerJFudd Posted September 18, 2022 Posted September 18, 2022 Thanks for the share! I’ll be watching for this one. Quote Yamaha CP88, Casio PX-560
Tusker Posted September 18, 2022 Posted September 18, 2022 I really loved that. So very very nice to see her confidence in her own voice. It’s not about technique. She has something to say. ❤️ 2 Quote
Dave Bryce Posted September 19, 2022 Author Posted September 19, 2022 I think the entire Silver Linings Suite is a masterwork. dB 2 Quote ==> David Bryce Music • Funky Young Monks <== Professional Affiliations: Royer Labs • Music Player Network
jerrythek Posted September 19, 2022 Posted September 19, 2022 Wow... I've seen her a few times and was always blown away. But this is a next level for her. The writing, the dynamics and emotion... Wow. 1 Quote
Mark Zeger Posted September 19, 2022 Posted September 19, 2022 I’ve seen Hiromi a few times and never warmed up to her music. Technically astounding but nothing that speaks to me. The video of this project was interesting. In August, I saw her in an extraordinary setting, an all star Newport Jazz Festival tribute to founder George Wein. Here she’s comping (!) with Christian McBride, Trombone Shorty, & Lewis Nash on “St James Infirmary”. Both Hiromi & Shorty came in just for this set. I have video but the file is too large. 2 Quote
Bobby Simons Posted September 19, 2022 Posted September 19, 2022 The Zalwinul-ish thing she goes into at 4:30 is too cool. Quote Yamaha P515 & CK88, Pianoteq, Mainstage, iOS, assorted other stuff.
Theo Verelst Posted September 19, 2022 Posted September 19, 2022 I'm no fan of the woman or the few works I've heard. Clearly there's considerable skill level and the ability to put down a concert, with music and improvisation (I presume). For an A game in jazz I don't have her pegged, I don't believe she's into the deeper sound production game either. Neither is needed, but I don't feel challenged. T Quote
16251 Posted September 19, 2022 Posted September 19, 2022 Disclaimer: I didn't watch video and I'm a schmuck for saying that she is too happy. <of course she is amazing on every level but I'm not moved> 1 Quote AvantGrand N2 | ES520 | Gallien-Krueger MK & MP | https://soundcloud.com/pete36251
MathOfInsects Posted September 19, 2022 Posted September 19, 2022 Wow, that was incredible. A nice "vacation" in the middle of the day. I hope she wins a Pulitzer. I'm a fan of hers, and very suspicious of the amount of commentary around her that seems to imply some kind of "outsider" status. She's beyond a master. That touch, her command of rhythm and dynamics, her sense of humor in her choices, those contrasting moments of lightness and fireworks...plus that amazing personal energy while she pulls off all those high-wire juggling acts...what a beast. 2 Quote Now out! Theo Verelst Posted September 19, 2022 Posted September 19, 2022 The video isn't overall strong on rhythm that much, and the sound gets boring soon. Quote
ProfD Posted September 19, 2022 Posted September 19, 2022 I totally dig the way Hiromi always seems to be having fun while she's playing keys. She personifies someone who has a job that doesn't feel like a chore. if there is any stress in it, can't tell from her demeanor and ability. Hiromi is a super talented pianist. 😎 Quote PD "The greatest thing you'll ever learn, is just to love and be loved in return."--E. Ahbez "Nature Boy"
