Film composer Jerry Goldsmith dies at 75

Academy Award-winning composer Jerry Goldsmith, who created the memorable music for scores of classic movies and television shows ranging from "Patton" and "Planet of the Apes" to "The Man From U.N.C.L.E.," has died. He was 75.

Goldsmith died in his sleep Wednesday night at his Beverly Hills home after a long battle with cancer, said Lois Carruth, his personal assistant.

A classically trained composer and conductor who began musical studies at the age of 6, Goldsmith's Hollywood career spanned nearly half a century.

It included an astonishing number of TV and movie scores that have become virtual classics. From the clarions of "Patton" to the syrupy theme for TV's "The Waltons," Goldsmith sometimes seemed virtually synonymous with soundtracks.

His hundreds of works included scores for "The Blue Max," "L.A. Confidential," "Basic Instinct" and "Chinatown."

Whoa!! Holy mackerel! Wow, Jerry Goldsmith has long been one of my idols. He seemed to be in good health. As far as I know, he was still working regularly.

I'm shocked.

The Black Knight always triumphs!

Me too. But I think we can agree that in many, many cases, he was the best thing some films had going for them. I was never a fan of the Star Trek films, but the scores were gorgous. He was a leader in the industry and one of the best composers of the 20th century. RIP.

Hopefully John Williams will be around for a long time (my favorite). I'd hate to see the good scoring gigs go to Philip Glass. The Danny Elfmans and Howard Shores in the world are very good, but not legendary (yet).

I really liked his score for "Planet of the Apes". A sad day. I heard about this on the radio on my drive in to work this morning. Too bad.

Goldsmith had a style, but it was a style that varied widely from project to project. He endowed each project with a unique sound and emotion. I can think of some other first call film composers who don't share Goldsmith's diversity.

Jerry was also an early adopter of synthesizer technology for film scores. Most of his work was orchestral, but he wasn't an "acoustic only" snob. He was one of the mavericks who opened up the possibilities for electronic scoring, a trail blazer who paved the way for Hans Zimmer, Mark Isham, James Newton Howard, and other modern composers.

When I take alook at the list, it's amazing, like he had a "real" job making music! Only the best can do that and if you notice, it was five years before he got his 2nd job making music for money and then another two until the next, he must-have had a tough time getting up-to-speed. Planet of the Apes was revolutionary!!!!!

Has anyone done their own compositions to already completed films? I was thinking about doing Metropolis again, just to see how it would sound with "psychedelic acid-rock electronica", I only wish I had the time(note to self, shut-up)! :(

For some reason, I didn't think he was that old. I think the reason might have had to do with the constant freshness of his compositions. I've seen many of those films on that list. And it proves he had NO discernable style.

And in a composer, that's a GOOD thing!

RIP, Jerry!
