MOTU 24i core system -- need mic pres or not?

Recommended Posts

24 channels in box, with PCI-324 card. Nice price. One reviewer ->here<- (the ONLY one so far) says it records great direct to the hard drive with no external mixer needed. Those who know for sure please tell me: true or false? Thanks.

There is nothing wrong with it and it works for many people. It works pretty fine with synthesizers, guitars processed through FX units with good cab simulators, etc. However, if you're the kind of person which likes to get a more colored signal at the recording time, you will need a mixer to shape the input signal before it gets to hard disk. I do preffer on not to. A MIC preamp is a welcome addition in almost every recording system. Those built-in preamps can not compare to a dedicated unit. So if you're pursuing a great vocal track -or any recording with a condenser MIC- you'll have to get one for sure. It sounds absolutely better.

Hell, Yes. I did not pay "a lot" of attention regarding it was the 24i. The 24i is mostly considered as an expansion for other MOTU systems, so you can have mic preamps and digital connectivity in the other interface and with this you can add a 24 input expansion unit. 24i has no mic preamps. It features 24-bit analog TRS Input and Output (balanced/unbalanced) connectors operating at +4 dB. It also provides a selectable +6 or +12dB boost per channel for interfacing with -10 gear like the outputs of synthesizers. Sorry. Yes, a MIC preamp / Mixer will be required for MIC recording and non line level instruments. Nice interface :D

In case you guys didnt know... Guitar Center is blowing these things out for $499! GC cost on these is $1150. Seems they're not gonna be a regular item at GC anymore.
Originally posted by Duhduh: [QB]Guitar Center is blowing these things out for $499! QB]
That's what sparked my interest, Duhduh (my shallow pockets and all :) ) Thanks for the link, usicMa, but I'd already been to MOTU, and to every review I could search and find __ and they didn't tell me what I've asked, that's why I came to the experts here. :) The 896 your link points to is a great piece, but only 8-ins vs. the 24i's 24 ins, (i only need 2 outs if I'm tracking and mixing inside the PC) more money than the $499 GC sale, and firewire only without the 36 track-channels potential of the PCI-324 card bundled with the 24i core system.
