John O. Lennon
Last week European Union officials announced approval of the merger of Sony Music & Bertelsmann AG's BMG following 2 days of closed-door meetings in June. This leaves 80% of the European market (including online sales) in the hands of 4 conglomerates: Sony-BMG, Vivendi Universal, EMI & Warner Music, w/Sony-BMG set to handle about 25% of that market. Opponents of the merger claimed this would lead to higher CD prices, fewer choices for consumers & stifle development of legal online downloading but EU anti-trust chief Mario Monti concluded there was "insufficient evidence" for this. Comments are invited (here, not at the EU ), especially from Euopean forum members & those with active overseas sales operations.
