Ever wrap your board in a mover's blanket?

OK I'm looking at Sweetwater and they recommend a soft case for the Stage 3 76 which costs $599.  The dimensions of the 76 weighted key version that I own are about 5x14x44.  This bag is overkill because it has the end handle and wheels that I don't need or want .... too bulky.

There is a Nord soft case for their $299 smaller 73 key board that looks like it might work for my 76 board.  It says the internal measurements are 4.33x13x44.48.  Can I squeeze my larger board into this case?

From your first post, I thought you had the 73 key Nord (which is the NS3 Compact). Sounds like you have the NS3 76 HP?

If so, that first case is the Nord one and while it's a nice case (I used one a few years when I had the NS2 76 HP), I agree it is overkill for your needs and too expensive. They've gone up a bit in price over the years.

I also don't think you can squeeze the 76 into the Compact case as the 76 is wider, deeper, and taller. That Compact case fits like a glove around the Compact NS3.

I feel like there are some options here that may not show up in traditional search results, like companies that make soft cases - I am trying to remember a few I've used over the years.

Eric +1. If you have the 73-key compact, then Nord's case is the way to go. Perfect fit, reasonably good build quality and adequate value.

If you have the 76-key model, then consider Roland's CB61RL (cheap, thin, I have one) or I hear Yamaha's bag for the MODX7 is a good fit and better quality for a bit more money.

Cheers, Mike.

Your 76 definitely won't fit in the 73 bag.  It's a perfect (quite snug) fit for the 73.

Based on the dimensions you gave, you'd probably be best off with this case for the Electro HP models, it seems like your Stage 3 would fit.

Thanks, that looks pretty good.  I'm wondering about the height of that case being 9"

Makes me wonder if there might be too much wiggle room, height wise, since the Stage 3 height is only 5"

Would I have to add a layer of foam on top of the keys so it didn't move around too much inside the case?

I used to move a frickin' Triton Pro X in towels. But the first time it slipped from my already-tenuous grip and slid down a flight of metal stairs was the last time I did that.

Apart from the fibers and dust, I think your moving blanket idea had solid thinking behind it. As others have mentioned here with differing levels of friendliness, I think the only way something like a blanket of any sort would be OK would be if you sewed up three sides like a sleeve (as you mentioned originally) and velcro for the open end, but the opportunity cost there is probably higher than just buying a soft case.

But I liked your out-of-box thinking! I also have these covers made out of spandex with a drawstring that would prevent dust and scratches but not a real ding. Maybe that would be enough if you were super careful?

"For instance" is not proof.

Cases or coverings are never for when people are careful, they are for the things that still happen in spite of being careful.

OP, your original thought was, “Why buy a case for a keyboard I never intended to move?” And that makes sense. But the second you do have to move it, a new paradigm is needed. It sounds like you’ve gotten there.

Remember, now, that ANY case will be better than none. Just shop by dimensions and price and if you end up with extra room inside, THAT’s when you can put that moving blanket to use. The goal right now is to get something other than a keyboard-killer around that $4k investment.

Now out! "Mind the Gap," a 24-song album of new material.

I think Sweetwater has mistakenly listed *exterior* dimensions for that case.  However, that case isn't wide enough for you, it's made for 73 key Electros.  Interior dimensions are 42.5” x 14.2” x 5”.  Your NS3 HP76 is 44" wide.

Let's put this thread to bed.

https://www.roland.com/global/products/cb-b76s/

Internal Dimensions: 49.75" x 14" x 5"

NS3 HP76: 44" x 13.6" x 5"

$160, in stock at Sweetwater.  Wrap your sustain or expression pedal in a towel and stick it down at one end to fill up the extra 5"  Done.

I've done it before but don't recommend it as a permanent solution. Too many things can happen, and there's nothing like having handles to help carry your case.
