Craig: Battery soldering advice

Recommended Posts

With the renewed interest in FM(FM7 ect.)I regained interest in my old Yamaha FB01,however the system battery is about 6 years past it's 7 year lifespan, sometimes I have to restart the thing a few times to keep it going. They have the battery at Radio Shack.Do I need a special soldering Iron and solder? Also I have the Ram Banks backed up but since I can't load the Rom banks back in I'm a little unclear as to what to do(mem protect on/off ect).Any general advice would be helpful(short of paying someone else).

Did you ruin it yet? I don't know the gear or what happens to it when you remove the backup power, but if you're just concerned about the effect of heat from soldering, don't worry. With those little batteries like the blue ones on a motherboard that look like an electrolytic capacitor, if you can solder a joint in 10 seconds or less go for it. With the right technique it shouldn't take more than 3-5 seconds per side to remove and to replace.
It's OK to tempt fate. Just don't drop your drawers and moon her.
