Great Donald Fagen interview. Broad scope and candid.

Yes it does cover some ground. Although I read Eminent Hipsters when it came out he provides more examples of his literary influences in this interview. Confirming the time traveller theme in Pretzel Logic was fun. I've read plenty by Philip K Dick and others but going to have to read some William Gibson - not sure he is that well known in the UK?

Off-topic, but Gibson's "Neuromancer" from 1984 is at least a big deal, a heavy influence on the so-called cyberpunk genre. Actually, I just an interview of Gibson's in The Wire magazine - which is a UK publication.

Thanks for this, what a great interview. And that"s because the interviewer really knew about his music, literature, and culture in general. So you can see how well he clicked with Fagen, right from the start. That doesn"t happen all the time, but when it does⦠great things come out.

I"m reminded of Jon Regen"s interview with Keith Jarrett in this old magazine, what was the name of it? Oh yeah, Keyboard Magazine! Jon connected with Keith right away, and Keith was agreeing with him, and getting enthused, and great conversation ensued. It"s a special skill, or maybe just the right pairing of subject and interviewer. This interview was like that, two guys sitting in a room talking about things that interested them. Again, a great read.

More OT--I'm a big Sprawl fan (that is the world of Neuromancer and comprises at least that novel and two sequels).

Keep in mind that novel was written in the early-mid 80s, so you run across some stuff just a bit dated. Stuff like "gigabytes and gigabytes of data" like it's a huge amount.....and of course now we have thumb drives with way more than that, and easy uploads to cloud storage etc. Also, if tempted to say "this is like that movie the Matrix!" remember which came first.

For me it's mostly about the almost-lyrical writing style, not everyone's cup of tea for sure.
