Ipod touch 5th gen vs ipad mini 2

Hi all

In my pursue to move into an all software rig and i tend to use more and more my iPad mini 2 with Korg Module, VB3m, etc for gigs and rehearsals along with my Korg PlugKey as a sound card and charger.

As the capacity of my old iPad mini 2 is very limited (only 16 gigas), i was wondering if the IPOD touch 5th gen or the iPhone 7th gen (which would work just nice with my Korg PlugKey) are good subtitudes with more space.

My question is if these nice machines are as good as my old ipad in terms of memory, glitches and the hole performance experience. Do you guys use some of them either live or for reheasals?

So: do i stay on my old iPad mini 2 with less gigas or do i move my rig to an iphone 7 pro or ipod touch 5th with more space to load all my apps?

Thanx for your input

everymac.com is a good source of the specs and relative performance (via benchmark data) of all the models.

Storage (i.e. your 16 GB) is not really a differentiating factor, since every model is available with different amounts (and all are available with more than 16, even the model you're already using).

Having more actual memory (RAM) becomes especially useful when running more than one app at a time, so that's a spec worth paying attention to even if its benefits don't show up in benchmarks. Apple does not officially provide that info, but it is listed on the everymac site.

Remember also that, while iPads can run all the music apps that run on iPhone and iPod Touch, the iPhone and Touch can't run all the apps that you can run on iPad. Apps can be iPad-only, with interfaces designed to work only on something with a bigger screen. Even an app that does work on all devices can compromise by showing less info on the iPhone/Touch screens in a way you also may find less desirable.

Bottom line is, IF you know that what you want can be done on the smaller screened devices, there are some potential advantages... maybe the iPhone is something your already own (or you need to buy a phone anyway), making it the most cost-effective way to go; or if you don't have/need the phone, them the Touch is probably the cheapest solution... and both have a very small size which may allow you to place it in a particularly convenient location in your rig where you would not be able to fit even an iPad Mini. BUT if you can afford the price and the placement space for an iPad (even a Mini), it will give you the widest selection of apps and often the best interfaces for them.

I'm gonna repurpose my iPhone SE (original), now on a shelf with no SIM card (and needing a new battery) as an emergency sound source - and maybe even my first choice of sound module for some gigs if they're not dependent on a huge arsenal of sounds. I'm using my iPad Air 2 for a few things but the SE's processor is one gen newer and according to everymac.com its geekbench scores are as good or better than my iPad's â which runs Pure Piano and VTines at the smallest available buffer setting I see (64 for VTines and 128 for Pure Piano). Not too bad for an almost seven-year-old device.

Actually i already own both ipad mini2 and the following apps: Korg Module, VB3m, GM Rhodes, Ipolysix, IMS20, Oriental Strings. The Korg Module and the VB3m run equally on an iphone and ipod (i have to check the others thought). I want to use my Korg PlugKey on both occasions as a charger/sound interface, so i limit myself to these exact models which are compatible to the Plugkey.

I don't really need the iphone, except for the apps, neither do I need the ipod, cause I already have an Android phone for my phone calls so I'll probably buy either one just for the gigs IF their RAM is superior to my iPad's.

Its true the ipad screen is better as far as ergonomic goes but also for my eyesight (I'm not getting any younger), but i still have to check the RAM of both machines compared to my iPad's. Playability goes first and ergonomics come second

EDIT

iPod touch 6th gen and iPad 2 mini have the same 1 giga of RAM - so no need to change

But...

iPhone 7 have 2 gigas of RAM and the iPhone 7 plus has 3 gigas of RAM which, i guess, will make having more than one app open a breeze compared to the others

Considerable difference

...which should work with any model that has a lightning connector.

Actually on the Korg PlugKey specs, it"s clearly indicated that the newest models that support this device are the ones I"ve mentioned:iPhone 7 plus and iPod 6th generation. Nothing newer than these ...

Interesting. I've seen online that people have used it, but if it's not officially supported, I can see wanting to avoid it.

I have a 5th gen ipad, so not apples to apples, but I've noticed B-3X (the main thing I use on it) wants to default to higher buffers than I like, presumably because it thinks my machine can't handle it. So with some apps the newer processors might be a good idea. I've been gigging with it with great success, just got my buddy using it as well. We both have the MODX so that handles the interface.

I'm probably going to take a hard look at the new ipad minis when they come out but I want to see someone else using it first :) I would use a phone but B-3X unfortunately don't work on it. The mini would be a nice compromise in size, though at this point I'm planning on using a sturdy music stand horizontally to hold my Key Largo, Behringer monitor mixer and the ipad so size really isn't a great concern.

For those looking into iPads for music, Apple has been dumping refurbished 6th gen iPads on its refurbished site (which is often out of stock). So, for example, for $230 you can buy a 32GB iPad direct from Apple in like-new condition that will hold and run well B3-X, Korg Module, and Ravenscroft. Contrast that with the going rate for modules that do the same thing - a good opportunity for folks who don't like the used market and want a music-only iPad!

Thanx for the info

Actually, having seen the prices of second hand iphones, a second hand music-only ipad is also under my radar. For the moment I'll stick with my ipad mini 2 for some rehearsals. If it works there, it stays. Otherwise I keep the other options open. Actually both Module, Neo soul keys and VB3 seem to work for iphones (but the older ipolysix and IMS20 not...)
