Napster and IUMA team up

Recommended Posts

This just arrived in my email (I have a song up on IUMA). Wondering what your thoughts are on this: [quote] Hey Everybody, Do you want to start getting paid when people download your music? Yes? Okay, good. Because we've found a way to make that happen again. We're excited to let you know that we've teamed up with Napster to bring your content directly into the hands of their subscriber base. And to pay you anytime one of their users downloads one of your songs. Early this year, Napster is relaunching with a paid service. This means that in order for people to use all the functionality, they'll have to pay a subscription fee. And under our agreement with them, we're making all the content on our site available to these paid subscribers in a special secure format that will allow you to have more control over what happens to your music on their network. You can check out more info on the new Napster here: http://www.napster.com/preview/ Now we know that this isn't neccessarily for everybody so we're not going to force this on you. If for some reason you don't want to be a part of this new deal, you can opt out at any time by going to http://www.iuma.com/ArtistsOnly/Napster/pageNapster-Opt_Out.html But, to tell you the truth, we've been really looking into the new Napster and honestly feel that this is a great, safe way to get your music in front of a new audience while getting paid at the same time. What's so great about this partnership, you ask? o Your music will be integrated into Napster's official catalog o You will receive 50% of all royalties generated by your songs (Napster will cut us checks on a regular basis for money generated by IUMA content. We'll take half of that and split it up amongst our artists based on how many tracks each artist sold out of the total number of IUMA tracks sold.) o Your songs will be distributed in Napster's NAP format which includes Digital Rights Management, meaning no one will be able to listen to the tracks without being a paid subscriber. o If for any reason you want to remove your material from the service at any time, you can o Napster tracks all the downloads, so you will know how many times your songs have been transfered Not a bad deal, eh? We hope that you will give this a shot because we think it's a great deal for independent artists. Plus, the more content available on the new service, the more attractive the service will be for subscribers. If you're interested in being a part of this, you don't have to do anything. Your tracks will automatically be included when the service relaunches early next year. If you're skeptical, you can opt out now, but we'd reccomend waiting until it launches and giving it a trial run. There's really no harm involved since you can pull your material at any time. As always, feel free to it us with any questions or suggestions. Hopefully you're all as excited about this as we are. :) Cheers! I have a page at IUMA. I have actually received -in the past, prior to IUMA's problems before caming back to life with VITAMINIC's help- some Checks from them. Great thing :D Right now there is not a chance to get paid again for letting your music being listened. With this agreement it seems things will come back to life again in that sense. Sounds cool to me. I will NOT ask them to keep me out of the new agreement. I feel IUMA is still being managed for Musicians BY musicians. "I trust them" in the sense they will be checking the downloads. What actually "worries" me, is that NAPSTER is not the most visited site now. There are a lot of new "napsters" in the web working without problems... Bottom Line: For me, it's good news.

On a side note re: IUMA, have any other IUMA subscribers received emails from a radio station in Russia wanting to play your song(s)? About once every other month I get an email from someone in Russia wanting to air my crappy tune...is this some form of IUMA-specific SPAM/scam? Just curious... Peace, Harold

GusTrax, I think I'm at about the same point right now in forming an opinion on this deal. When I used to have a site, IUMA payed and payed on time for their banners and they always seemed open about everything. The only caveats I've come across in the few minutes I've had a chance to consider this are: 1) 50%? I'm sure napster takes a cut (let's assume 50%), then pays IUMA that 50%, they cut that in half so you end up with 25%. I wonder if you'd get a straight 50% if you cut out IUMA and went straight to napster... (Don't get me wrong - I could care less about getting paid for my music, it's a hobby, if that!) 2) A small red flag got raised when in the above email, the founder says: "But, to tell you the truth, we've been really looking into the new Napster and honestly feel that this is a great, safe way to get your music in front of a new audience while getting paid at the same time." I took business and marketing courses in college. One thing that we were taught by *multiple* professors was to NEVER use the phrases "To be honest" or "To tell you the truth" - it told the listener (if they were aware) you were lying about whatever you were talking about. So...has IUMA actually checked this deal out for what it's worth or is this an opportunistic jump? Just a few things that make you go "hmmmmm" :D
