interference

Recommended Posts

This has been happening for a few weeks now. It starts at around 3:30 pm or so~ and lasts till around 6:30-7:00 pm (I'm just now starting to document the times of these interferences) I hear this noise comming out of my otherwise "quiet as a church mouse" studio monitor setup. It's as if someone is running a hair dryer or a vacuum cleaner type of electrical interference. When I noticed it today, It would pulse ~4 seconds on and ~3 seconds off for about five minutes straight, then the noise stays on for about two minutes, then goes away for a minute or two. Then it comes back on and repeats a similar cylce.

Now, I know what you are all thinking.. something wrong with my power amp, console power supply or another peice of equipment, right? Well get this, the noise also shows up on my TVs (both of them) as a pair of slow scrolling approx 3 inch thick 'staticy' lines (19 inch TV) Even with everything in the studio powered down, so it's nothing in the studio. I wasn't running any appliances at the time. So, something outside of my house is causing an electrical interference. I suspect one of my neighbors is running machinery with crappy wiring. Either that or, I noticed some new cell phone towers near my house. Would that cause this problem?

Is there a way to find out where this intereference is comming from?

it's starting to become a rather annoying problem.. :(

My first thought was a HAM or illegally boosted CB setup. Could be the cell towers, but chances are that you'd have problems all the time if they were the cause - not just in the afternoons / early evenings.

Do you have any power conditioning? Any RFI / EMI filters for your gear? I'd look into that first if you don't.

Well, in the studio, I done ran out of outlets on the two conditioners I already have so I had to plug the amplifier directly into the wall socket.

I'm going to have to buy another power conditioner and plug the ol amp in and see if I still get the afternoon static/buzzing noises. As for the TV, don't really care about that too much... I just don't want that evil noise invading my monitors..

The fact that it shows up on you TV and monitors makes me think the interference is coming in on your power lines. If it was RFI (ham radio, CB) you would hear garbled talking and the screen would flash in sync with the talking. It could be something like a neighbor's large drill type motor with bad brushes that is introducing the noise back into the system. You could also have a "not so good" connection at your breaker box that is allowing this noise to enter. Know what you're doing if you get in there to check it out.

FoxTick,

Check with your neighbors to see if they have the same problem.

If it's a radio-induced problem, you could get some folks from the FCC to check it out.

Are you certain that it only happens between 3:30 and 7:00 PM?

Have you tried shutting down all the other household electrical equipment to try to localize the problem? I know this is a hassle, but perhaps the next time you hear it, you could turn off the air conditioning, refrigerator, and anything else that is suspect.

It could also be a short circuit at the transformer on the pole outside your house. This happened to me a couple of months ago. I heard a buzz in various devices in my house and saw it in a dimmed light bulb. I went outside and SAW IT! Where the high voltage line enters the top of the transformer, there was a flash - it was arcing. When the electrical folks finally fixed it, it turned out that when the transformer was replaced (after the last hurricane came through - whenever that was), the repairman didn't tighten the connection. That's all it was.

Also, is anyone near your house hooked up to any medical equipment? This is a long shot, but I think that someone who's connected to the same circuit and transformer that you are has a device that is causing this.

On the other hand, it could be those same guys who brought you CROP CIRCLES! ;)

I should have said, if the source of the problem is a legal ham radio operator the FCC will do nothing. If it's an illegal CB operator or a cell site causing the problem they might, but you'll have to do all the leg work and present your case in detail.

Well, it's been two days with no noise problem. Maybe I wasn't the only one who was having problems. It's too soon to tell.

I haven't changed a thing in the studio.

I have another Furman power conditioner on order anyway..
