England :thu::thu::thu::thu:

V

Croatia :thu::thu:

France 3 - 1 Switzerland

Winners of group A: England, France

Thanks, good games tonight!

Tomorrow's delights:

Sweden v Denmark

Expect a tight & even fight, both teams are good.

Italy v Bulgaria

If Italy doesn't win this one, there's no justice.

Unfortunate trivia: if Sweden v Denmark ends with a (2-2 or more) draw, Italy is out even if they win over Bulgaria.

It's better to keep the ball rather than just push forward and give the ball away under most circumstances. You have to pick and choose your moments to go for it.

"Soccer players fake fouls, sometimes they don't even get touched and they fall and cry like ladies, why?"

To get a free kick/penalty and get an opposing player booked. If a player is caught diving he can get a yellow card.

"People spend 90 minutes watching a game that ends 0-0....is that exciting???"

It depends on the game. Americans seem to have this wierd mentality that a higher scoring game is automatically a better one. I've seen thrilling 0-0 draws and boring 3-0 matches.

"On a penalty shot:

Is very unfair for the goalie, he has to cover the whole space, and can't move foward or talked to the kicker [??]The goalie should be allowed to moved forward, scream, or whatever...It's unfair, golaies don't have a chance unless the kicker misses high or wide or kick too soft.."

Plenty of penalties are saved. Besides, the point of a penalty is to punish the side that fouled ... it's hardly a punishment if the keeper has the advantage, is it?

"On the other hand:

It's a very popular sport.

"Too many tournaments..."

Ditto

"Too many Diffrent Cups..."

Ditto

"Too many games going @ the same time..."

I think it's pretty much standard to only have one game taking place on a pitch at a time ;)

"I only whatch the world cup"

Umm ...

So...that's all you got??? :D:D

Sweden 2 - 2 Denmark

What a great game! The Danes were fabulous, our team had to work real hard and in the 89th minute managed to score. This is exactly result that Italy feared.

Italy is out! (and they "only" beat group C's bottom team Bulgaria with 2-1)

Woohoo! :thu:

I'm so glad Italy is out. First the spitting then the stupid accusations that the Swedes and the Danes would play for a draw.

Uefa maintained there was nothing suspicious about the 2-2 draw between Sweden and Denmark which ended Italy's Euro 2004 campaign.

But Uefa may take action against Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon and Italian federation president Franco Carraro, who have made match-fixing allegations.

There had been suggestions prior to the game that the Scandanavian rivals would play for the draw.

But Uefa spokesman Rob Faulkner said: "There isn't anything there at all."

Sweden and Denmark denied the match-fixing claims before and after the game that sealed their quarter-final spots.

Meanwhile, Italy were not the only losers on the night as bookmakers also admitted they had paid out heavily on the result.

Punters had bet heavily that Denmark and Sweden would play for a 2-2 draw to eliminate the Italians on goal difference.

"That result will cost us a six figure payout, but we have done well out of the elimination of Italy, so there is a silver lining to the cloud," said William Hill's spokesman Graham Sharpe.

The bookies had been offering the 2-2 scoreline between Denmark and Sweden at odds of just 7/2, the shortest odds they have ever quoted for that outcome in a competitive match.

Mr Sharpe added: "Whatever price we put up was snapped up by punters desperate to back that outcome and we soon had to shorten the odds to 7/2, the shortest price we have ever offered about a 2-2 draw."

Sweden's 2-2 draw with Denmark ensured that both teams progressed from Group C - but will take Italian paranoia to a whole level.

After Giovanni Trapattoni's team were dumped out of the 2002 World Cup by some contentious refereeing decisions, Italy, not to put too fine a point on it, went beserk.

Perugia's maverick president Luciano Gaucci sacked his South Korean striker Ahn Jung-Hwan, who scored the golden goal winner against the Italians.

The nation went into a state of mourning and it took a long time for a raw wound to heal.

Euro 2004 was supposed to be the tournament that finally put paid to the pain of the last World Cup, but instead events at Estadio do Bessa on Tuesday will ensure Italian people continue to feel the world is against them.

A 2-2 draw is an unlikely score in any match, especially when one of the teams has yet to concede in the competition.

But in Porto on Tuesday no one was talking about anything else.

Supporters from both teams were interviewed on Portuguese television.

None of them gave any credence to the ridiculous theories that the match had been fixed - but all wanted the game to finish with Italy on their way home.

One Danish photographer, who has been following the national team for 27 years, said: "I have seen just about everything in that time but tonight I think I will see something new."

Italian television requested seven extra camera positions so they could analyse every minutiae for evidence of foul play - in the end they were granted two.

And Italians would have been apoplectic at the scenes an hour before kick off when these two friendliest of neighbours made their way onto the pitch to get a feel for the stadium.

Several Swedes and Danes are team-mates at club level and mingled together, catching up and exchanging jokes.

But once the action started, there can be no suggestion that the match was anything other than a genuine battle for ascendancy in Scandinavian football.

At one point, with Denmark clearly on top, Freddie Ljungberg and Olof Mellberg engaged in a frank exchange of opinion as to what was going wrong.

Denmark had the better of the match and, leading 2-1, had numerous opportunities to kill off the contest.

With full-time looming some of the Swedish fans had fallen quiet, but some stuck to the belief that a 2-2 draw had been cast by the gods.

And sure enough Denmark goalkeeper Thomas Sorensen, superb throughout the tournament, failed to hold Christian Wilhelmsson's regulation cross in the 89th minute and Mattias Jonson hooked the ball home to spark scenes of mass celebration in the Swedish camp.

The last minute of the game was played out in surreal fashion, with the ball played between the Swedish defenders while the Danish stayed up field, a good 30 metres away.

It was torrid viewing for all Italian supporters.

But afterwards talk of a conspiracy was quickly shot down.

Sorensen said: "Anyone who saw the game can be in no doubt that both teams tried to win it."

And he highlighted the conditions for his mistake.

"It was very hard and the ball was very slippery, for both the keepers it was very difficult."

Sweden midfielder Freddie Ljungberg told BBC Sport any talk of a fix was ludicrous.

"If it was 0-0 or something maybe you could say we planned it but to score four goals is very difficult to plan and Denmark's goal to go 2-1 up was a bit of a fluke so you can't plan that."

Just try telling that to an Italian nation that woke up on Wednesday to realise another nightmare had come true.

hmmmm, sounds as if something was happening to fix the match but i am not 100% convinced it was a fixed match.

If it is, well as far as i am concerned, the credability of football has gone out of the window but i really think this isnt the case unless real evidence is put forward that that was the case, i think the Den V Swe game was a game played fairly even though it was a shock Italy went out.

Thanks for posting the article Mats :)

Three observations:

1

If Italy played better footie, they would have qualified for the quarter finals. Italian football is great, Italy is a great football nation, but most Italian teams rely on foreign players - not much of a help for "gli azzurri" in this tournament. This is not the first time they are out of a major tournament. They are poor losers.

Denmarks Consulate in Milan was attacked today by angry Italian supporters. They cut tires on cars belonging to the consulate and it's staff, they threw eggs on the consulate building.

2

Their star, Totti, made an ass of himself whe he was spitting another player in the face. He was rightfully supended and his team suffered because of this.

3

The scores speak volumes. Denmark and Sweden have played much better football than Italy in this tournament.

4

Last nights games was not a walk in the park for either team. Both Denmark and Sweden worked really hard to win, it was a very intense game (except for the last seconds). The other game was also far from kid's play - it was close that Italy didn't beat Bulgaria, the winning goal came very late.

------------------------

Another reflection: Denmark is incredibly good. Sweden must play better or we will be eliminated sooner than later.

-------------------------

Playing today:

Holland v Latvia

Germany v Czech Rep.

Yes, they are poor losers. Yes, they would have qualified for the quarter finals had they scored more goals, or managed to win one of their first two games. However, Italy would have also qualified for the quarter finals had the blind ref called some of the numerous fouls against Del Piero or Buffon in the game against Sweden. Italy should have won that game.

The actions of a few idiots have nothing to do with football itself.

Absolutely. He deserved what he got, and probably more.

high scores don't always equate to better football, though I'll agree that Italy should have stepped it up, and didn't.

Yep.
