I also really appreciate all the Public Service Announcements about drunk driving. How about a new campaign for courteous, safe, driving? What the fuck? Most people aren't drunk, they're just bad drivers. HOW ABOUT A CAMPAIGN ABOUT PAYING ATTENTION WHILE YOU'RE DRIVING?!!!! How about that? Fucking bunch of idiots driving around in a trance, is it really too much trouble to hit the turn signal indicator? Plus we have a need breed of morons who love to talk on the phone while they're driving. Pull the fuck over and talk, if you really need to talk more than a minute or two. You know what? I have a right to be mad because I've been in three serious car accidents in the last seven years, none of which was my fault. All caused by people NOT PAYING ATTENTION! More Americans lose their lives on our highways EVERY YEAR, than lost their lives during The Vietnam War. That's a fact. God damn it. Driving is the most dangerous thing most of us will ever do. We have to start using our turn signals, paying attention at all times, giving the right of way to pedestrians, and also being more courteous to each other, always. There was, and is a great campaign against drunk driving, and this is NOT the cause of the greatest loss of life from traffic accidents. The majority of accidents, and LOSS OF LIFE, from traffic accidents, is caused by driver inattention. This is documented, and you know it's true just from the way you drive. Some people are really good at it, i.e. my gf, but it only takes one slip, if you know what i mean. I get on her case about that. Fwiw, and not to be sexist or anything, but 95% of those driving and talking on the phone seem to be female. (or maybe it's because i don't look at the guys so much).. You know what? But Charlotte has so many of those fools who think they can outfox the system by having TWO driver's licenses: one in NC and another in SC. That way, if they get too many points on the NC license, they can still drive using the SC license. THESE are the people you've got to watch out for if you're driving around Independence Boulevard. They're either driving too slow or too fast. They NEVER use their turn signals. And I believe that these are often the same guys who are long-time founding fathers of the "Pimp-My-Ride" club. Cary is just now getting the cameras at the stop lights. It's a good thing because it was less than 2 years ago a guy ran a light and plowed into me, totalling my vehicle. If I had been in the intersection just a couple of feet more, I probably would not be here to harass you today! But what are you going to do? Move to California? Is There Gas In The Car? A couple of weeks ago i got the remainder of someone's fountain drink in the back. A cup full of ice hurts when it's travelling 25mph faster than you are. Most of the time they just barrel by me, not giving any room or leeway, it's all sideview mirrors whizzing inches from my head. When you're in town, they'll do stupid stuff like pull their car into your way from a side street. It's not that they don't see me, they're looking right at me when they do it. It's part of that "me first" mentality- the "I'M not going to be the one that has to wait" shit. I usually have to make an emergency stop in this case. I ripped out the rear view mirror(not really interested in where I already was anyway), and got me one of them mini TVs. Once I get my DVD player and the 5.1 set up, I'll be totally free of the stress brought on by those other morons with wheels. And I like to keep my directional lights on at all times. Sometimes left. Sometimes right. I like to be unpredictable. And this seems to make people do the darndest things when they drive by me. I always like getting the #1 salute, that finger thing. But I never use a cell phone. Hell, if I really need to communicate with anyone when I'm driving, I just flip open the laptop and crank up Messenger or Outlook. Actually, I think it's also that more guys than women seem to use headsets or speakers with their cellphones. Same thing is true with truck drivers BTW... they have always had radios and now they often have cell phones, but mostly use a speaker or headset. It IS safer to use a headset or speaker because that leaves both your hands free. A lot of people don't use turn signals regularly if they're talking on a regular handheld phone, because signalling would require them to take both hands off the wheel. For whatever reason, people have come to think that turn signals are optional, much like, courtesy is optional, I guess. This guy could have killed me and the numerous other people travelling along the motorway and at 70 MPH, it would have been disastrous! I hate these big trucks that think they can bully of anyone else thats in a smaller car. I drive a Fiat Bravo and it would have been squashed like a bug and all because of the selfishness of one twat that thought hogging the lanes was his right! A lack of respect (born from a lack of self-respect) seems to lead people to do selfish things on the road. Abrupt un-signaled lane changes on the road apparently are statistically much more dangerous than speeding. I see it as happening across race, class, and gender lines. Those crappy Beemer SUVs seem to be driven by the worst of the worst, though. Time and time again, the drivers doing the most egregious things are holding a cell phone in their hand. One teacher asked us "What does it mean when this car has its right turn signal flashing?" "It means his right signal is on." i.e., There's no good way to predict what other drivers are going to do. I agree, Weewus, that turn signal use has declined and that it sucks, but my most hated unpunished infraction is tailgating, which even if they religiously use signals, many drivers seem to think is just OK. Tailgating not only is dangerous for the obvious reasons, but it's also very distracting for the tailgaitee and other traffic. Which leads to Inattentive Driving.
