He will be missed. I would like to think that right now, he and Jean-Jacques Perrey are having a joyful reunion in Heaven, with a whole squad of angels volunteering to do their tape splicing for them...

I was riveted by that album, but he became a personal demigod when he and pianist Leonid Hambro released "Switched-On Gerhswin." That dialogue taught me a lot about analog synthesis in a big rush, but not the insane studio gear it took to get there at that time. Their version of "Rhapsody In Blue" is a bizarre little gem.

If those two are in Heaven, there are no more tape hassles. They're using Ableton Live.

At least he lived a good long life.

It's strange timing, as I was working on my all-acoustic accordion-tuba-viola cover of "Popcorn" last night.

I do not recall being aware of his tenure as music director of the Joffrey Ballet (ballet is my life passion).

I find it very amusing that so many people, including me, have at least dropped in a quote from that somewhere. YouTube covers of it abound. Your idea sounds like one of the more hilarious ones. Please post it when its available. This silly tune is as anthemic to synths as "Jump" or Vangelis's opening to "Chariots of Fire." It had the right mix of novelty and inspiration at just the right time. For me, Mr. Kingsley leaves a positive mark.

Oh, I finished it two years ago, but never mixed or mastered it, and recently have started reviewing my choices of virtual instruments for Braslian percussion, which my arrangement uses in place of a drum machine or western Drum Set library. Surdos are so tricky to nail in virtual instruments. I may just order a few early next year and do it myself with live playing.

Anyway, I consider an acoustic arrangement to be a great tribute, as the man was always about using synths in an organic way, with the dynamics and other factors that are present in acoustic music.
